The game itself seems to work completely fine
Rarely there's a disgusting lighting error when a "boss" spawns or the lighting from a crystal ball at one of the shops, which makes everything look extremely lit up like a deepfried meme
Weird lighting issues at the shop or sometimes when a boss spawns. Probably fixed by using Proton version.

Native runs fine, but controller issues made me use Proton, which was also fine.
Using the native build, my controller inputs would sometimes not work, as if two inputs were bound to the same button. Sometimes it would fix itself on restart, sometimes it wouldn't. This problem didn't occur using Proton.

Works great on PC and Deck
The Steam Deck controller is even better than the keyboard and mouse controls of the PC version.
Native version works perfectly
Set left trackpad to "Joystick".
Frame Limit: 30; Half Rate Shading: On; Thermal Power Limit: 8; GPU Clock Frequency 800
Runs perfectly. Locked 30FPS with graphics at max.
Game ran perfectly fine on the Deck. No modifications were necessary. The "Official Layout for Hand of Fate - Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad" worked well. No complaints. In fact, I prefer playing this original title more than its sequel, Hand of Fate 2. The card and token presentations are exceptional, and the Dealer is compellingly creepy. Great game.
TDP limit 10 watts. GPU frquency 1000.
On the default recommended Proton version, the game frequently crashes when opening the inventory screen. Switching to GE-Proton7-29 seemed to resolve this issue.
Game is enjoyable without any tinkering. On default Proton settings, some crashing may occur on the inventory screen which is not central to the gameplay. The game features a generous auto-save system which will avoid losing any progress. Switching Proton versions easily removes the crashing issue.
fantastic pick up and play experience
