The game runs but I experienced a lot of stuttering and sometimes long freeze-frames while entering new levels. It is playable but could be better. Also some characters have missing polygons, but that only affects cutscenes.
Depending on your setup there might be some issues that need to be fixed, but then it plays very well.

When running on Wayland (sway), the game could not properly use the 2560x1440 resolution of my monitor. Trying around with gamescope didn't help me either. But on Xorg all worked as expected, so I'd recommend doing that for this game.
When using Proton experimental or Proton GE the mouse in menus would get stuck (in game the mouse worked, so it's still mostly playable). Using Proton 8.0-3 (or earlier) instead solved that issue.
Extra tip: Look at https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Metro_2033_Redux#Skip_intro_videos to disable the lengthy intro cutscene.
The game starts and the tutorial works fine, but in the moment of entering an online match I get kicked back to the home screen of the game. Unplayable in this state.
Once you get it running with the right resolution everything works smooth as expected. Online multiplayer worked really well too.
Switching to the right resolution and fullscreen is quite glitchy and took a bit of effort. This might just be because I use multiple monitors. Once you get all settings right though it behaves pretty well.
Online multiplayer did not work for me with Proton Experimental or Proton 6.15 GE. Proton 6.3-6 worked very well save some minor annoyances.
The tutorial videos only show with Proton GE.

A few places (specifically the Multiplayer Menu and Score Attack multiplayer) have pretty low framerate (around 30fps on High settings). Otherwise everything runs pretty well.
The game sometimes locks up during loading until any key is pressed. Gameplay is not affected.
This is for the demo version. With newer Proton versions the game wouldn't start at all and gives cryptic shader validation errors. Proton 7.0-6 was the newest that worked for me, and really without issue at that point.
