Again working as intended after both the recent BG3 and Steam patches hit (as of Nov 16th)
gamemoderun %command% --skip-launcher
Patch #4 (probably in conjunction with a Proton patch) temporarily screwed up Vulkan and caused odd graphical artefacts. As of today, it seems to be working fine again. So here's for another 200+ hours :)
gamemoderun %command% --skip-launcher
As of hotfix #11, game won't launch. Forcing Proton Experimental, then switching it to bleeding-edge beta, seems to solve the issue for now. Source: https://larian.com/support/faqs/steam-deck-issues_108
tl,dr: bought it, installed it, played it.
the initial loading screen was frozen for ~30s on first start, and made me check whether my system was still alive. it was frozen, kind-of, and eventually all my queued-up keyboard commands registered again all at once: ugh. after that, though: smooth sailing.
1h+ in station was fine. after undocking, game just froze. had to restart 6 times to get back into station. this is way worse than ~1/2y ago
game now freezes ~20sec after undocking. ~1y ago it just got sluggish after 5min or so
~20sec after undock, game freezes and dies.
did xaudio2_6 and xaudio2_7 in winecfg (had no audio after initial splash screen), added bBackgroundMouse=1 to Fallout4.ini as my mouse was very sluggish.
game suddenly froze and died after ~1/2h of playing and wouldn't restart. updated to latest proton beta, and it black-screened (and on the wrong monitor).
what fixed it for me: revisited winecfg, adjusted offset in Fallout4Custom.ini X-offset for main monitor.
current state: 35-60fps at good-ish settings, considering my old hardware.
with nvidia 430.26 and current proton 4.2-7, game starts out of the box again --- if windowed (black screen/process lock-up if trying full screen mode). added WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% to steam and i got full audio and no visual hiccups. once in the game, though, same problems as months ago: mouse thinks it's going off to a 2nd screen to the left (as in, you can turn right all you want; if you want to turn left, movement suddenly stops at a certain angle.) not being able to even fully turn around makes it quite unplayable. :(
I'm running forced Proton Experimental by default. loading feels rather slow considering my hardware (and my active Steam library lives on an NVMe). game slowed to a stutter after about 5 or 6 hours of playing (no idea why); restarting it solved the issue for me.
used -force-opengl launch option in steam. also running experimental branch of subnautica. only quick "does it work?" test done, no time to actually play now :(
worked right out of the box, and started on main display. settings menu only accessible after actually logging into your character. sound effects felt a tad bit off at times, like walking noise.
GUYS, this questionnaire is unrefined OVERKILL unless you're going for a full review rather than giving a hint (which ain't a "hack". just a hint. might work, or not.)
So. That evil black screen with random static noise that seems to stay forever: looks like it's a sequence of splash screens not shown for whatever reason. Pressing ESC 4 times got me past it, eventually showing you the actual loading screen, and then a blurred menu. If you ever've been drunk on your PC, you'll find the graphics settings easily. Once I got that sorted out, it started easily on the screen I set it up on, and in the selected resolution, from thereon -- after pressing ESC x4 on every start, ofcourse.
