Starts off fine, but performance degrades a lot to the point it because difficult to play.
Starts off getting 70 FPS at near max settings. After a few hours in game, it struggles to get above 40 FPS and drops a lot in instances of high movement (i.e., combat).
I don't recommend this on Linux.
Game is unoptimized and runs poorly on linux
Game starts off fine, but after playing for a bit the FPS drops significantly and starts stuttering. It's especially bad in combat instances where there's numerous zombies.
Took a screen shot with Spectacle to share on Discord and it crashed when trying to switch to Discord.
The game requires a lot of tweaking to have a stable FPS. For me, it wants to default to using Ultra/Max settings, but that results in only 40 FPS at best. On Fedora, compared to Ubuntu, the system is a bit less stable and I encountered more issues with the game crashing. In one case, I ended up crashing the desktop environment but the game could still be played albeit at a lower, stuttering FPS.
Good OOTB Experience
Game runs flawlessly with default Proton compatibility options. No launch options or modifications needed.
Game works, but only with X11 and Proton Experimental. The Paradox Launcher is a little slow to start up.
Game didn't boot up using latest, non-experimental Proton (9.x)
Some ghosting of objects moving was observed (a color tail following a moving car for example). Some pixels wouldn't update until the camera was moved when switching canceling building.
Without forcing a Proton version, the game doesn't launch from Steam.
Works fine with no modifications OOTB
The opening cinematic doesn't show (not sure if bug or intentional though). It instead shows the rainbow bar TV image like if there was a technical difficulty. The skip button in the bottom-right corner is visible and works without issue so it's a minor annoyance.
Works OOTB; No Steam Compatibility/Proton needed
Keyboard input can be a bit laggy, but this could be a game bug.
It's a demo, but it works. Some issues with keyboard input, but this game is pretty much just point and click so it's a nuisance at best.
Works Out of the Box with Latest Non-Experimental Proton Version
Fog/Smoke not rendering very well unless at max settings
-d3d11
Poor quality in smoke (pixelated). Some rougher edges on the ship.
Game works fine with highest stable Proton version. Some graphics issues, especially with smoke. Setting the game to highest settings had no effect. Added -d3d11 launch option to game and it seems to have higher qualtiy graphics versus the default Vulkan.
Works OOTB
No issues noticed when compared to Windows version.
Straight-forward install and startup. No need to tweak launch options.
Some early frustrations with creating a new team, but it works
Game crashed when creating new team
With a little patience, the game was able to run without crashing after making a new team.
Freezing On Startup
They game only boots up a black screen with someone saying "Sir". Could not locate the config.ini file others mentioned and LD_PRELOAD="" generated errors with the game saying it's not a valid command line option. Tried multiple versions of Steam's proton -- didn't fix anything.
Too annoyed to guess at another solution.
Works if you manually change the poe2_production_Config.ini file to use the DirectX12 API
$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/2694490/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Path of Exile 2/poe2_production_Config.ini
Change render_type to DirectX12 from Vulkan. The game should start up fine after that.
All other suggested tweaks by users here didn't work except for modifying the config.ini file.
Frequent Crashes
Can only run the game for a few minutes at a time before it crashes.
The game is currently unstable at release. I'd hold off on buying this game for Linux platforms for a while. I will be refunding this game before the 2 weeks is up if they can't fix it. Hours played isn't an issue as the game crashes after about 5-10 minutes.
Game cannot run for more than 5 - 10 minutes.
I've tried running this game several times using the following compatibility version:
- Steam Linux Runtime 2.0 (Solider) (installed alongside Planet Coaster 2)
- Proton latest stable from Steam
- Proton Experimental
- GE-Proton9-18
None of these compatibility options work. The game runs fine for about 5-10 minutes and then locks up and shuts down. The developer also doesn't really care that it doesn't work on Linux. If you want to play this, I suggest you use Windows.
Games works great, but some settings need adjusting
The game will run fine on with the latest stable Proton from steam, but as another person pointed out disabling Global Illumination seems to fix the instability issues (crashes). It's a shame because Frontier told me the issue was I was using Linux, but now it seems like they have a badly coded game.
At any rate, the game is playable with no special hoops to jump through.
Good OOTB Experience
Vehicle SFX seemed quieter than when played on Windows with the same settings
Was able to use DX12 from the game's launcher. No instabilty issues noticed.
