Blueberry Muffins!
Published
Perfect with Proton-6.21-GE-2. I tried several GE and non-GE others including 7.0rc-GE, only 6.21-GE-2 makes a playable game for me.
Proton-6.21-GE-2
https://github.com/redmcg/wine/wiki works. Install the game, try to launch it once, follow the wiki. The game plays very well on my rig, if I'm not doing massive combat I can play with all the graphics turned allll the way up, huge orbital stations are gorgeous and while the fps drops in places like that (it gets down around 30fps sometimes) it's worth it for me.
I'm pushing 50 hours in. Everything works.
Notes:
there's some initial-authentication stutter-steps to getting it running, you have to log in through Steam and it's not automatically done for you, Googling found the solution pretty quick when I hit this.
if you've got Horizons you might notice the game gives you the option of playing with Horizons no matter what you told Steam you were going to play. Don't tell Steam one thing and the ED launcher another, Steam won't notice when the game quits and you'll have to start killing things (up to and including Steam) before you can play anything new.
Didn't try for very long, new at the game, but connected to multiple servers, accepted contracts, got responses.
do the launch options, protontricks and winecfg, you get fallout 4 running afaict full speed and quality with maybe very minor glitches.
also PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90, following recommendations.
protontricks 377160 xact faudio winecfg, windows version 10, graphics: autocapture, no window manager decoration or control, virtual desktop, 1920x1080,
faint echo on some npc voices, mentioning only to be thorough.
not certain this isn't fixed by incremental winecfg changes, mouse motion was sometimes bounded so you couldn't spin-look around but it hasn't recurred
once the game wouldn't quit nice, eventually had to pkill -9 fallout, but that was once.
... but awww, the microtransactions stuff doesn't work.
Everything works, zero issues.
The sole glitch I encountered was, if you alt-tab out while the game is loading it'll freak out, eternally bringing itself to the foreground and then losing focus.
Proton 4.11-13
protontricks 1129580 ---force vcrun2019
4.11 works around the startup hang, the vcrun2019 gets past the setup failure
To alt-tab out you need to switch to windowed mode and then disable keep-in-front with your window manager every time. It's not as bad as it could be, you can hit C to aCcept new settings, do your stuff, then switch back to fullscreen with a click and another C.
My rig is barely-even-midrange these days but with "high" textures and foliage, and "ultra" view range, the game's gorgeous and responsive. Just shut off everything else except those, then play for a while and tweak up. The tutorial movies don't work for me, you have to poke around the radial Q
menus to find stuff and it's not obvious that e.g. traps are in the furniture section. I tried the later proton versions and a bunch of suggestions, but dropping back to Proton 4.11 was the easiest except for those movies I don't think you really need.
**Community Edition** (in beta menu) on GE Proton 7.14 works OOTB, start on low graphics and tweak up until you find your GPU limits
Switching display modes and alt-tabbing required some window-manager finagling and generally led to having to kill and restart the game, after which the new settings would take. This is one of those games that seems to enjoy repeatedly forcing itself to the foreground.
If you set the graphics too high the game hangs outright or things start misbehaving, seems to me the in-game dialogs start loading very slowly as you get close to limits
Could connect and load, couldn't interact with the worlds, didn't try very hard, it may have been they were just exceeding my rig's capacity.
Stay within your GPU's limits and the game runs very well now.
protontricks 287450 -q dsound directmusic
gets the sound working nearly perfectly, no delay or glitches in-game (a short crackle on startup is the only blemish).
Quick battles work, the Alexander campaign works, the skill tests work, but the tutorials hang. Didn't try multiplayer.
tl;dr: game stutters at regular ~1sec intervals and playing it's unpleasant enough to not be worth it. a note: when I alt-tab out, the game brings itself back to the foreground, and I think it does it in sync with the stutters?.
The protontricks work as advertised, protontricks 244850 -q dotnet472 xact gets the game running. You don't absolutely have to move KSH.wmv, if you don't you have to click on a black screen to get past it.
Did a clean reinstall to check I hadn't forgotten other customizations, `PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%` works, also pure OOTB works.
The mouse goes wonky every so often, something to do with alt-tabbing I think, haven't found a reliable way to make it stop misbehaving besides bounce the game. Opening the PDA or anything with a menu, the mouse behaves, back to the view control, it's wonky.
