Game closes as soon as it lunches
Using the latest Proton versions, it throws an error that says "Unable to init VR runtime"

Works exactly like on Windows, just install and play
You may notice several "errors" popping up telling you about VR headset not detected/missing etc when you clicked PLAY. Don't worry if you don't have VR. Game still launches and plays fine.

This game has been working for a long time, but it now works in VR too. Meta Quest 3 via ALVR.
Enabling VR to work on this game is very recent, due to a fix in Proton Experimental bleeding-edge branch that should soon be in Proton Experimental and then Proton stable. If you are reading this in 2025+ it might have already been comitted to Proton stable.

Works Out-Of-The-Box with Proton 8.0-3 (Steam recommendation).
Didn't try for very long, new at the game, but connected to multiple servers, accepted contracts, got responses.
Only runs with Proton 4.11-13, newer versions are broken, older versions prompts for CD key (prob. not detecting steam dll)
Minor crackling

The game seems to be running. I was able to complete basic movement tutorial just fine. Need to use Proton 3.16-9.
Weapons firing noises sounded crackly.
Loading times were slower than on my another lower powered Win10 machine
I've tried using newer versions of Proton such as all of the Proton 6 and Proton 5 versions, neither of them have worked. I also have tried using the GloriousEgroll tinkered Proton versions 6.10-GE-1 and 6.4-GE-1, however those didn't work either. The results vary from either not even launching a game window, to launching a game window and freezing on it. However, the SteamPlay vanilla Proton 3.16-9 seems to do the trick. I haven't played long enough to see whether everything works, however I saw that:
- the DRM bit wasn't an issue
- menus weren't an issue
- controls weren't an issue (was using keyboard & mouse)
- movement in game, jumpdrive, in-game pop-up menus, planet landing - no issues encountered.
- sounds seemed to be fine for the most part, except for the quality of gun firing.
- graphics seemed alright.

Black screen on startup
When I start the game I just get a black fullscreen that goes nowhere. I tried Steam in a Flatpak (bad idea). I tried the RPM Fusion Steam. I tried manually setting Proton to version 5.13-6, 5.0-10. and 4.11-13 but none worked.
Game runs beautifully ootb. I don't have a HOTAS joystick, so I didn't get to test that. Amazing game, hope more ppl play it.
Minor crackling

FYI: Evocron was specifically mentioned in a recent Proton Patch (github). Now, it starts, runs, playable. First start might take a while (shader creation? writing new files?). Later starts are faster.

Game runs at a wildly variable framerate from mid 20s to mid 50s. Disabling Esync doesn't help, and using Wined3d makes things even worse. It's playable if you can handle a lower framerate. The HUD causes a bit of lag, especially when using the mouse to steer.
Use winetricks and install dinput8: WINEPREFIX=/path/to/398170/pfx winetricks -q dinput8
Game will not launch and just hang as a sleeping process requiring killing manually to close. Installing dinput8 fixes this. Unfortunately, no fix for framerate

Nothing happens; turns into a zombie process that has to be manually killed. No errors or feedback.
