Native controller support seems to be broken with this version of Proton on this game, however the issue is resolved by using Steam's controller settings to override the default.
The game freezes and crashes at a specific point in episode 1 if running Proton Experimental. An older version of Proton can be used to work around this. 5.13.6 has worked for me.
