Proton 7 and experimental don't work properly so I reverted to 6.3-8 and have not had any issues
gamemoderun %command%
works fine out of the box
I am using the Steam flatpak on Fedora 36. You can still play the game with Proton 7 and experimental, but you have to tinker far more to get it working nicely, launch with gamemode not required, I use it with all games
Proton 5.13-4 (community build 1608395899)
game works with proton 5.0, but no audio. Because I am using the flatpak of steam, proton 5.13-4 native does not run (https://github.com/flathub/com.valvesoftware.Steam/issues/642) so i installed the community build and the game worked flawlessly. haver not tried multiplayer yet though
Proton 5.13-4 (community build 1608395899)
As previously mentioned, have to run proton community build from flathub as I run the steam flatpak and 5.13 doesn't work natively with the flatpak version.
minor tearing
Would not launch with proton 5.13-4
As an NVIDIA user, the key to this one is PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1. I also have to filter the DXVK device to ensure it picks my NVIDIA card.
DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti" PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 gamemoderun %command%
The game launches and works fine once you enable NVAPI support. Ran so well I was pleasantly surprised
MANGOHUD=1 gamemoderun %command%
works without issue on Steam in flatpak on Fedora 37 using the EAC runtime
This game is fun and kinda a hybrid of Battlefield 2 and Squad (according to other players, I personally wouldn't know coz I've never played squad). While the graphics are kinda simple, the gameplay makes up for it and it's a lot of fun to play with some buddies. It seems like easy anti cheat should still be around for community servers, so I don't think we're going to completely lose the ability to play the game on Linux anytime soon as they plan to support the steam deck. Personally I give it a 6/10 for playability, it could get boring if you play it 24/7 because there's only about 6 maps that are voted on frequently so you'll be playing the same content frequently, but the maps are large in the 127x127 player maps with a fair amount of variety in terrain. If you can find a few game buddies to kick around with it could be fun for extended periods of time but otherwise you may find yourself hitting boredom after a while. Still kudos to the dev team, there's only 3 of them and they've done a fair bit towards getting this game off the ground and providing a fair amount of content considering.
I had some problems running this game on a Fedora 38 instance with the nouveau driver installed, haven't tested with the standard nvidia driver in Fedora 38 although the error was around being 'unable to download package' rather than a drivers issue haven't bothered to try troubleshooting it properly as that's not my primary gaming setup, I wasn't sure if I configured EAC properly either, but removing the game files and re-installing didn't fix it and neither did updating firewall configurations in that host
I have been playing this game with Proton since 4.2-9 and it still works fine in 6.3-2.
game works but not able to be fullscreened in dosbox, boxtron works better for running dos based games
as noted with EWJ2, using boxtron works fine with proper full screen, but dosbox will not allow full screen in the builtin version for proton.
boxtron (native dosbox) flathub
unable to get fullscreen with dosbox in proton, worked fine with boxtron
boxtron (native dosbox) flatpak
with proton fullscreen was not possible (built in dosbox). With boxtron, fullscreen works without any issues
game experience is a lot more enjoyable with boxtron (https://github.com/dreamer/boxtron)
Proton 5.13-4 (community build 1608395899)
missing game text
ignore my previous report, was for a previous game
Game is lots of fun, plays a little bit like valorant (based on what i've seen of that game)
OBS_VKCAPTURE=1 ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=50 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti" gamemoderun %command% -dx11
with game in dx12 mode it would crash every so often in match, after changing to dx11 it seemed a lot more stable
One of a very small number of games that plays on Linux at launch. I have seen some windows players crashing as well so the bugs are just release bugs and no doubt will be fixed by updates as time goes by. I am using proton 9.0-4 not experimental actually. Not much tinkering required, I always have to tell steam to use my dedicated card and enable vkcapture for streaming and the pulse latency thing is because in many UE5 based games I get audio crackling, so this was a pre-emptive measure. VKBasalt has to be installed to use it, so if you don't have it you don't need to add that var. I enabled nvapi for my nvidia card just in case but I didn't test without it
with caveats...only homeworld 1+2 classic actually work for me. Homeworld remastered 1+2 both crash with 'access violation' errors.
gamemoderun %command%
Homeworld classic and Homeworld 2 classic work fine. remastered does not. Access violation issue when trying to launch either homeworld remastered or homeworld2 remastered
I have tried multiple versions of Proton with the same results. I didn't need to tinker when using Proton experimental and Proton 7.0.4, but had to install dotnet40 with protontricks to get the launcher to work with 6.3.8 properly. One thing with homeworld 1 classic was that the launch resolution was 800x600 so it looked terrible initially, I was able to set 1280x1024 after the game had launched. You probably want to set the -windowed launch setting in the game options (see winehq for a lot more troubleshooting steps). I tried a number of things to get remastered to work, but have not found a solution yet. Possibly it could be textures, but I am unable to change anything for remastered because the game doesn't even launch after selecting it in the menu and just shows the access violation dialog immediately.
Game runs fine on Proton 5.0-10
stuttering when I first got the game running, but that may have been shader caching
Initially on 5.13-6 I was unable to get the game running. After I switched to 5.0-10 it worked fine.
While the game has a lot of 'mixed reviews' on Steam, it was fun enough for me to play with the toddler. He doesn't care that the physics are broken. One thing he did mind was the engine noise, but after I turned that down it was fine for him. Just don't expect hyper realism in the physics department and you might enjoy it.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti" PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 gamemoderun %command% -dx11
lag in menu, lag with in game browser, and moments of lag during gameplay but from what I understand it's the game itself
I am enjoying the game, outside of the performance issues it seems to work fine. I haven't seen lots of other players online but I have been enjoying the story
RedKard anti cheat does not work 'unable to launch game process'
DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME="NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti" gamemoderun %command%
installed fine, unable to launch due to redkard anti cheat. I will be trying inside a VM later which will probably work.
