Running in DX11 mode the entire screen is displayed in a garbled, window blind-like pattern, though text is displayed correctly. Also tried running with PROTON_USE_WINED3D enabled, but the game wouldn't load past the introductory splash screen then. Running in DX9 mode (without PROTON_USE_WINED3D) is fine, though.
Trying to Alt+Tab would immediately and silently crash the game. Worked around the issue by running the game in a virtual desktop.
It's not perfect, since DX9 mode locks off many of the higher graphics settings, but it's eminently playable.
I haven't played far enough to vouch that the game is fully completable or bug-free, but it starts and runs acceptably.
The game would run without mf-install, but the opening video would not play, and I suspect that's also why other commenters mention video overlay battle effects don't work, either. I installed mf-install using the instructions mentioned for the original GRANDIA HD Remaster by Guregori:
- Start game once to generate compatdata folder.
- Download and extract mf-install (https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install) - ("code", "download zip")
- Get vidreszr.dll and mfperfhelper.dll from a Windows install's System32 and SysWOW64 folders and copy to corresponding directories in mf-install-master/ Rename file names to lowercase.
- Go into mf-install-master and open mf-install.sh in a text editor. At the end, paste:
override_dll "vidreszr" wine regsvr32 vidreszr.dll wine64 regsvr32 vidreszr.dll
- Open Terminal in mf-install-master and run:
WINEPREFIX="~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/330390/pfx" PROTON="~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton 5.13" ./mf-install.sh -proton
Game would load but immediately get stuck on a black screen with a working cursor until I ran mf-install.sh (which I tweaked to include vidreszr.dll for another game, but I don't know if that particularly DLL is important here). After that, the game loads and runs well.
I'm running the GOG version, not the Steam version, and it was not playable until I installed the Media Foundation DLLs. After that, it runs fine.
I've not played very far, but I can confirm that I can start a new game and everything seems to work fine.
Without first running mf-install, the game will load to the main menu (albeit skipping an intro video), but will get stuck with an infinite loading screen when starting a new game.
