The game freezes right after the logos (using GE-Proton8-32). It can be fixed by disabling VSYNC in <steamdir>/Atlas Fallen/media-next/renderer_git/settings.vulkan.json
. Just set the value of "vsync"
to "false"
.
Audio is distorted in some cutscenes, works fine in others
With default Proton from Steam, cutscenes are upside down and audio is broken (probably a "Media Foundation" issue). Switching to Proton-CachyOS 10.0-20250605 fixed all video issues and most of the audio issues (only the first campaign cutscene still sounds horrible). I've tried all single-player modes and they worked fine so far. Have not tried multiplayer yet.
Freezes on first button press
I see the character selection, but the game freezes as soon as I press a button to change or select a character. It's possible to go into the options and change resolution, though. But it's not possible to select a character or start playing.
I tried window mode, as suggested by other users, but it made no difference. Tried Proton 6.3-7, Experimental, Proton-GE-6.16 and Proton-GE-6.18, all with the same result. Older Proton version 4.11-13 gave me only a black screen.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_HUD=compiler gamemoderun %command%
EAC has been removed with the Wordslayer DLC. Works flawlessly now.
Using GE-Proton7-43 with DXVX_ASYNC=1 gives me 60-140 FPS on Ultra settings (depending on the map and nr. of enemies) and is completely free of stuttering so far. On a single occasion, the game froze for a few seconds during a heavy fight. Other than that, it runs perfectly.
Game works very well with Proton (tried multiple versions). The cursor feels a bit sluggish in the menu, but works normally in-game.
The non-steam version is missing the easyanticheat_x64.so file. Without it, you won't be able to connect to the servers due to EAC errors. I fixed it by downloading and copying the file into the EasyAntiCheat folder within the game installation (download, working link at the time of writing). Note that the version from Apex does not work in this case!
I got "Star Wars: Squadrons" for free from Amazon Prime Gaming. Since it's not the Steam version, I've installed and configured it like this:
- Installation: Lutris -> Origin -> Star Wars Squadrons (note that Origin is currently being replaced by EA app)
- Configuration: Use "Wine-GE-Proton7-35" as runner and enable EAC support
- Performance: Use medium settings and limit FPS to 40 (set refresh rate to 40 Hz)
- Multiplayer: Use the appropriate EAC .so file (as described above) for online multiplayer (not needed for single player)
With that configuration, the game runs fine with pretty stable 40 FPS.
Installed the Epic Store version through Lutris and changed runner to Wine-GE-Proton7-27.
I got Superhot through an Epic Store giveaway. The game failed to launch in Heroic, so I've switched to Lutris + Epic + Wine-GE. I did not try the native version, as it's not available through Epic, afaik.

Text is very small.
Significant frame drops during combat could be mitigated by using async shader compilation (DXVC_ASYNC=1) and optimizations below.
Online coop is buggy af. Sometimes it starts stuttering so hard when someone connects, that the game becomes unplayable. Sometimes the UI breaks / disappears mid-game. Sometimes items on the floor are visible only for the host or can only be picked up by the host. Apparently, these issues also occur on windows and seem to be independent of the Proton version. Nonetheless, I spent over 20 hours in online coop because it's a lot of fun if it works.
Without further tinkering, The Ascent is affected by significant performance issues (heavy framedrops during combat, down to 1-3 FPS). Things I did to optimize performance:
- increase VRAM to 4GB
- set swappines to 1 and increased swapfile (see https://github.com/CryoByte33/steam-deck-utilities)
- use DX11
- use GE-Proton with async shader compilation (DXVK_ASYNC=1)
- lower graphics to "medium" (with shadows to "low")
- allow tearing
- disable vsync, disable internal frame limit and set screen rate to 40hz
With those settings I get 30 to 40 FPS even in combat with many enemies and effects. Some stuttering remains, though. Use DXVK_HUD=compiler to see if it's caused by shader compilation.
In about 1 of 3 sessions, the game window stays black. A short sound is played, then it is muted. Apparently there are similar bug reports for the windows version.
I'm using the Epic version, installed via Lutris.
Runs fine with Proton 6.3-8, although about 20% slower than with Proton GE 7.0RC3.
20% less FPS than Proton-7.0RC3-GE-1 (but that version has broken online connectivity)
