While there's no Proton problems, the game itself has a few caveats that may need attention depending on hardware. While the game is running in DX11, CPU usage can become unreasonably high across all threads. Forcing DX12 gives more typical CPU usage. Certain effects hammer GPU hard regardless of game settings, which happens on Windows as well. One area of the game dropped me to 20 FPS until I reduced Post Processing to Medium. Shadows can be quite heavy. Medium keeps the game's look with the best performance. Running through props, and certain explosions hit GPU hard. Setting Effects to Low still doesn't help with that for my 6700 XT.
"Playable," needs more work.
On Windows, I get 60 fps in most missions. With Proton, I get stuck in the 30s or worse.
Can't select messages from the chat shortcut wheel.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 is giving worse performance.
Tried GE 5.8 Proton, game won't make it past the initial "Now Loading" screen.
Runs as well as native since Proton 6.3
6.3 has resolved whatever issue I had that severely hampered my framerate, and now all but the heaviest missions stay at 60. Just as on Windows.
Title screen is missing its background, with an effect showing as a white square in the top left corner.
In game, various minor effects are missing or show as white squares, but characters and backgrounds show.
Crash on fullscreen.
Forcing OpenGL mode doesn't help for any of the mentioned issues.
Text in the close confirmation box from clicking close in the title bar shows as empty squares.

Proton GE 7.35 and 7.36 cause the game to lock up with a black screen when alt-tabbed from fullscreen.
Official 7.0-4 and Experimental bleeding edge alt-tab as expected on my system.

Medium settings for 50~80 FPS.
Given the recommended specs on the store page, I was expecting my setup to handle the demo better.
Shadows seem to have the most immediate impact on FPS. Each step up reduces mine by 10~20. Medium is as low as I would go, as Low changes the look of the game way too much.
The Steam overlay will not work for me with the demo.
