I used the vc_redist.x64.exe patch in order to fix 'Out of Sync' errors with multiplayer. You can find a tutorial here: https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/127qxhi/fixing_out_of_sync_error_in_aoe2_de_multiplayer/
See vc_redist patch
Runs well just needs some tinkering.
Game ran pefect natively, however it was impossible to use fullscreen without unplugging my second monitor.
Fullscreen cannot be launched with multi-monitor setups. I'd recommend using the Windows version of the game instead.
Use the Proton version if you have more than one monitor.
Runs flawlessly, just be aware of potential future anti-cheat complications before you buy.
Microphone would default to audio output devices. Not a huge deal, just change in in-game settings.
Multiplayer works (for now) and is essentially indistinguishable from Windows. The developers have stated, however, that they will be dropping EAC support in favor of FACEIT, which does support Linux. Non-partenered community servers will still use EAC, however time will be needed to see if the game will be viable on Linux long-term. Just keep this in mind before you buy!
The game performs flawlessly and runs just as well as it does on Windows or MacOS.
Game would occasionally dip to 90fps and stay there, however a restart fixed this issue and it may have just been an issue with my OS.
Flawless
I wasn't even aware the game was native. Usually that wouldn't be something to mention but some Linux ports of games are worse than running the Windows version under Proton. Good job :)
Runs better than Windows counterpart.
Uses VAC
Runs about as well as Windows.
Using Proton GE caused the game to incorrectly open on my vertical monitor. Switching back to offical 8.0-2 fixed the issue.
VRAM management is an issue I have with Proton. Lowering texture quality to below what I had it on Windows was necessary.
Overall performs well. Driver/Proton updates and potentially a newer card could bring this up to par with Windows.
Probably.
Mouse would stop responding likely due to high CPU usage
CPU overhead in Proton causing significant performance problems on my hardware.
Overall decent experience. Perhaps driver updates or a newer card could fix issues?
VRAM management seems to be an issue in Proton. Typically having the game maxed out wasn't an issue, but I have to disable HD textures to prevent maxing out on VRAM and tanking the performance.
Comparable to Windows in most aspects. Definently playable.
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=0 %command%
From my experience, the game will have very intense flickering if the GPU is being maxed out. This was solved by adjusting in-game graphics settings to target a decent FPS and then capping the frame rate at that FPS.
The majority of the flickering took place during fullscreen gameplay. I suppose you could run the game in windowed mode to also fix the flickering but that doesn't seem as fun.
From the short time I played I experienced one crash: changing graphics settings while in-game not only crashed the game but my entire system. Generally the game seems pretty unstable, especially if you don't use the launch command as it will immediately crash otherwise. I do think you could get the game playable with about 30 minutes of tinkering with it.
Overall, I'd say if you are willing to mess with the game a bit and are fine with the game being blatantly unstable until you do so then you should be fine. I feel like the average gamer would be immediately turned off by the flickering (or the inability for the game to launch at all). However, if you are willing to tweak a couple settings, as with all things Linux, you should be fine.
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=0 %command%
While the game still will not run successfully run without the launch command provided, the game is able to run flicker free and stabily if X11 is used instead of Wayland.
Flawless
Had 1 crash in the 3 or so hours I played but I think that could've just been the game itself. Nothing that would be entirely unexpected.
ANTI CHEAT!!!
As everyone knows this game was just running absolutely rampant with cheaters and standard forms of anti cheat would not suffice! Therefore, EA graciously saved this game from certain doom by implementing their own proprietary and kernel-level anti-cheat (THANK YOU EA)!!! I LOVE EA AND THEY MAKE REALLY GOOD CONSUMER-FRIENDLY DECISIONS!!!! (sarcasm)
-vulkan
Launching the game with OpenGL would cause the game to crash upon startup. I had to switch it to Vulkan using the provided launch option.
The game runs worse than it's Windows counterpart, but it is playable.
Voice chat is completely disabled on the Linux version either intentionally or unintentionally.
There is the occasional graphical glitch or artifact that can occur. These aren't a huge deal and aren't consistent across restarts.
Compared to Windows, the Linux version of the game runs significantly worse. On Linux, I average about 60 fps with mostly medium settings. On Windows, I average about 130+ fps with the exact same settings.
Game ran at around 80 FPS with some slight dips. Pretty underwhelming considering it's 2D but my PC also sucks.
Game started and I joined a game and was instantly put in.
