I can confirm the game loads and runs fine with Proton Experimental provided you use its bleeding edge beta channel as of 2024-11-27. To enable this beta channel for Proton Experimental:
- search "Proton" in your library and find the experimental flavour,
- open properties as you would for a game,
- go to the Betas tab, and pick the bleeding edge channel,
- Profit.
I haven't played much so far and could not test everything, let alone compare performance, but I noticed nothing obvious so far. Before that, with the default Proton Experimental compatibility layer, the game would hang during the loading at the "Loading world data" step. Surely the fixes in Proton Experimental that make MSFS2024 run will be merged sooner or later.

It seems PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% with the performance issues I initially had.
I have not resolved the issue with crackling sound yet.
Works perfectly without tinkering.
I haven't noticed any of the issues reported in the below reports. Plain Proton install from Steam without custom settings worked perfectly, I get steady 100 FPS.
