Through steam, you can install the HF patch by setting your launch options to this:
PROTON_LOG=1 "PATH/TO/STEAMLIBRARY/steamapps/common/PROTON_VERSION/proton" waitforexitandrun "PATH/TO/HF/PATCH/INSTALLER.exe" && echo %command% > /dev/null
Make sure you get the paths right, then follow the installer's instructions.
To make sure everything loads correctly, change the launch options to override winhttp.dll:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" %command%
Installing the HF patch through steam was pretty painless, and once its done it works perfectly. The base game runs fine through proton without any customizations, but imo the HF patch is mandatory.
Performance seemed about on par with what I've experienced on windows.
