Sometimes it just crashes, so quicksaving is recommended.
I have already created a review where it was enough to switch the Proton version to Experimental. Then, a patch for Ubisoft Connect came, and the game stopped working, showing a message that Ubisoft Connect was not installed. Here's how I got it working again:
- Download Anno 1404 normally through Steam.
- Don't start the game, instead, use the Lutris Install Script for Steam.
- After doing this, the game started normally for me.
I was even able to use my old save files that I had backed up from elsewhere. However, I am now playing it in English because I'm not sure if changing the language to German via Steam will mess up the installation.
Pink screen in options menu.
It works in my case. Here is what I did:
- Switch to experimental
- Restart game several times until DirectX, UbiConnect-Updates etc. are installed (you have to restart after every patch)
- First time it will ask for an activation code, restart again.
- When starting the game then nothing will happening, but thanks to user ya-seen1984 on reddit it works: "Choose any Linux "system process tool" of your choice (for example: "gnome-system-monitor") and kill / terminate the process [in my case] "Anno1602exe". Subsequently, a new instance will automatically open, and the game will start."
- A pink screen shows up, then after some seconds the game starts normally.
Note: I was not able to change any options because in this menu the pink screen would return again (you can go back via ESC). Else the games works flawlessly so far. Note 2: Didn't try multiplayer yet.
Doesn't work on Gallium OS (for me)
Tried different Proton versions as well.
The game crashes immediately after hitting the play button. Maybe it's my poor laptop (should be enough though) or it is an issue with Gallium OS since I couldn't find another person with the same problem. Using different Proton versions didn't help either unfortunately.
Had quite some fun with the game on Windows though so no offense against the developer.
The game works very well on my Chromebook when I select the stable_build_revert version in the betas tab.
Thanks to the developer to offer the beta branch following some user reviews in the steam discussion.
As mentioned from other users, you have to delete SpeechSynthesisWrapper.dll in Pentiment_Data/Plugins/ because else it will crash shorty after hitting the play button.
Now everything seems to work flawlessly.
This game works flawlessly so far. As mentioned by the others, you have to delete SpeechSynthesisWrapper.dll in Pentiment_Data/Plugins/x86_64 though, else the game will crash shortly after hitting the play button.
