Game runs perfectly even in multiplayer using GE-proton10-2, I use almost lowest settings and a low resolution for highest responsiveness.
Use GE-proton10-2 (Glorious Eggroll's custom version of Proton, get it using ProtonUp-Qt)
Official Valve Proton 9.0-4 and 10.0-1 (beta) do not currently work, they give error "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime" as of 2025-05-20 even Proton Experimental errors with said error.
No custom game start command tested, works well without any in my setup.
I play using ALVR v20.13.0 on a Quest 2 and everything works perfectly, audio ouput and input from the headset, audio device autoswitching once alvr is started, streaming latency is minimal especially with lower resolution and higher refresh rate set in the settings, just need a quick fix as explained here https://github.com/alvr-org/ALVR/wiki/Linux-Troubleshooting#fix
Game runs wonderfully even in multiplayer, I suggest lowering the graphics and resolution for the highest framerate and responsiveness.
Official Valve Proton 9.0-4 and 10.0-1 (beta) all currently work perfectly, as of 2025-05-20 even Proton Experimental works perfectly, although I still suggest using GE-proton10-2 or more updated version of Glorious Eggroll's custom version of Proton for the best experience, you can easily get them using ProtonUp-Qt.

I am currently using KDE Plasma 6.3.4 with Wayland.
I play using ALVR v20.13.0 to stream over wifi to a Quest 2 and everything works perfectly, audio ouput and input from the headset (remember from within SteamVR to select the correct audio output and input devices tho), streaming latency is minimal especially with lower resolution and higher refresh rate set in the settings, just need a quick fix as explained here https://github.com/alvr-org/ALVR/wiki/Linux-Troubleshooting#fix and remember to start SteamVR from the ALVR Dashboard and not from Steam (if you did by mistake exit SteamVR and then start if from the ALVR Dashboard).
You need to use Proton 7 and ingame change the API to Vulkan after the latest 13.5 Update, Proton 8 and 9, experimental crash the game now.
From my experience and current setup not running the game using Vulkan (at least on my Nvidia GPU) has significantly lower performance, you might also need to remove the old proton previx before switching to Proton 7, simple how to do that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxWJ1xvowMk
