Works great with a little tweaking to make it run initially
I swapped arma3battleye.exe and arma3launcher.exe (renaming them as each other). I also used these launch parameters (disabling esync to make it load and others to make it load faster): PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% -nolauncher -nosplash -world=empty -skipintro
As others noted, online gameplay works, but the game crashes or stops responding after a while when playing on a server.
On one of my computers, it showed the initial ArmA 3 loading window (Initialing addons...), but the game screen never appeared. I ended up needing to switch video cards (from an NVidia 560 to an Nvidia 750 Ti, including updating the driver accordingly).
Neither works nor plays
This game does not work, nor does it play; hence, neither can I play it, and am forced to work, instead.
It's much less enjoyable in multiplayer because of the graphics problems. This game is the only reason why I reboot into Windows.
In Windows, I can play this game at 4K with medium/high settings at 60 F.P.S. In Linux, it's unplayably choppy at 4k or even 2560x1440, unless graphics settings are set to low (and then it looks terrible). I can load a training or single-player map and play at 4k with medium settings, but once I switch to multiplayer, it's unplayable with those same settings.
Even at 1920x1080, framerates sometimes drop to unplayable levels, though sometimes I can play a full match at 60 frames per second.
This has been true across many versions of Proton and Glorious Eggroll, and despite trying various tweaks including F.S.R. and 'HighResShot 320x200'.
The game has crashed occasionally, and sometimes it freezes.
Multiplayer performance renders the game unplayable unless I significantly decrease the resolution and other graphics settings.
The problems remained the same even after I installed Manjaro Linux on my computer (temporarily) in case my problems were caused by my specific Linux distribution.
The game freezes for about 15 seconds at a time, usually within 10 minutes of starting a match. This happens at most once per match, and sometimes only during the first match.
See my note about freezing. Basically, it sometimes freezes for 15 seconds at a time, no more than once per round.
When I used an NVIdia 2070S, performance was terrible in Linux while it was fine in Windows). Since I switched to a Radeon 7900XT, performance has been great -- steady 60FPS on 4k with all settings at epic.
