The Linux (and Mac) versions of this game are very outdated. Some DLC are missing, surround sound doesn't work, the textures are broken in 4K, and I think some other small features here and there only exist in the Windows version.
Tried the same winetricks as suggested by others and after a couple rundll errors, the game launched perfectly fine. It is worth pointing out that you should adjust the winetricks command to accommodate your steamapps location if it isn't in the default. And, if it fails to run, try re-installing dotnet40. For whatever reason, that failed to install the first time around, but worked fine the 2nd time.
Like others, you need to use a crack to avoid Uplay. Just google search "far cry 3 crack" and there's a roughly 20MB zip from megagames that worked for me. The game has an error when starting up, but otherwise it seems to play very smoothly. Part of me wonders if instead you could try installing Uplay within the wineprefix that the game installed in, but I don't feel so confident in that since Uplay searches for the Windows version of Steam. It's a lot of work to install Uplay in Wine, so I didn't bother testing this.
Used modified binaries
You will face some stuttering at first while the shader cache is being built but otherwise the game runs very smooth. Audio crackling might be fixed via PA tweaks.
Some audio clipping, but otherwise plays smoothly. NOTE: Although the game can be played in 32-bit, it won't remain stable (it eventually crashes during a race). Doing so will also entirely prevent the game from being played in 64-bit. To fix this problem, go to your steamapps folder, then compatdata, and then enter 243800. Delete all of the contents within that folder. Re-launch the game in 64-bit mode and it should be stable and playable.
Overall runs well but every once in a while, it'll crash after completing a race. 32-bit oddly enough seems to perform better. Flame and other particle effects seem to really hurt performance but otherwise the frame rate is good. There's a possibility newer versions of Proton fix both of my issues, but (at least for me anyway), I tried 2 different gamepads and neither of them worked with various releases of Proton 4.x. They both work just fine using Proton 3.16-9.
With xliveless, the game will launch and I get get to the loading screen, but it never gets anywhere from there.
Played it from beginning to end successfully, though there was some stuttering here and there and my DS4 gamepad wasn't playable, for the same reasons others have posted.
I too have tried a "without Steam" crack and confirmed the game runs. There seems to be an odd issue where shadow and object detail seems to have a dramatic performance hit on the game, despite the fact my GPU usage remains below 25%. Maybe this is a Mesa or radeonsi issue? The people who rated this gold are Nvidia users, so they might have some of the application profiles carried over from Windows.
The fixes mentioned below make the game (and audio) play smoothly, but I got a hard freeze twice. The system wasn't totally frozen but I wasn't able to do anything either.
Playing native works fine with stereo speakers and a basic mouse, but you'll need Proton if you have more audio channels or mouse buttons.
Open up a terminal and run the following command: WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/265690/pfx winetricks dotnet40 Let it install and the game runs just fine. It's a little slow at times, but still very playable.
If you don't use surround sound, use the native build - works fine. Otherwise, Proton 9 will work equally as well.
-nolauncher
Using native build, surround sound doesn't work.
Like others have mentioned, try the protontrick, adjust to fullscreen from the settings, and the game will play just fine.
protontricks 202170 vd=1280x720
Protontrick was needed to get the game viewable/playable
After using the "skidrow" no-DRM crack, the game launches just fine with no other adjustments. Performance is fine and gamepad rumble works too. However, it seems some of the menus are a bit screwed up. There were some things I couldn't tweak as a result.
