if your friends are on windows have them host multiplayer to avoid issues, if your playing single player issues are nearly non-existant
--skip-launcher --dx11
when HOSTING multiplayer only, attempting to load WILL cause allies to lose connection, and most times will freeze the game
when HOSTING multiplayer only
difficulty getting allies connected via online multiplayer, sometimes will crash or freeze immediately after they connect, one time they connected, and couldnt move, but my characters could still move. seems to be more or less a connection stability issue when hosting
%command% --skip-launcher
Load in issues, parts of map taking time to display, however I have the game on a hard drive and attribute it to that
Cannot load when hosting multiplayer
Not often
Various bugs all exclusive to online multiplayer, instability when connecting people. Inability to load saves it disconnects your allies and freezes loading. Sometimes you can't load a cutscene so when you walk into one your friends have to hit you till your out and do the cutscene instead (this is typically fixed by clearing cache before playing)
--skip-launcher --vulkan
On Vulcan characters are sometimes facing the wrong way, or have their eyes desync from each other and start looking weird directions during cutscenes
When hosting online multiplayer using dx11 you will be unable to load without losing connection and getting kicked from multiplayer often resulting in a crash this issue is seemingly absent when using vulkan
Dx11 will cure visual bugs. However you will get occasional crashes, and significantly slower map loading (watch stuff slowly load in around you)
Game crashes when it tried to load the hints/moves the sheep teach in the dream world
Would like to see more current reports for this game, down to one problem and the fixes below seem to make the game not work at all now. Long as you dont talk to the guide sheep everything else seems to work (so far <hour of play) but it sucks if you forget its gonna do that and havent saved in awhile...
Proton 9 variants all seem to open it and crash when you go beyond the main manu, 8.05 runs but has major artifacting/loading issues.
missing legs etc stretched in odd angles, sometimes blocking view entirely
Game locked up after about 10 minutes, when running toward the rock that falls in the intro
game starts in small window but if you change the resolution and set windowed fullscreen it will correct it, it always launches the small window and then jumps to a full window after loading once youve set a higher resolution
may not be proton related but i get some minor screen tearing, thats only issue
fullscreen sometimes doesnt play nice with tabbing to other programs
occassionally takes multiple attempts to start
one time game crashes, other times has worked fine
As of newest steam update (or possibly a kernel update, reguardless after updating my system recently) the game no longer launches in official proton versions, switching to GE 7-20 solved instantly, hope this helps the next guy with this problem, yes ive tried 7.0-2 and experimental, and commands listed by earlier post, for me this was only thing that worked
6.3.8, 4.11
no luck even with installing the fix suggested by prior users, maybe worked on previous version before current nvidia driver, but now doesn't even appear to attempt to boot, would love to see someone who knows what their doing make a fix
Using Proton-621-GE-2 game starts, but cant actually play
After installing the windows live workaround mentioned below, the Game gets to character selection, and you can pick your character, or access in game settings, but the minute you continue past that intial menu the loading screen hangs and then crashes, or blackscreens if you tab out and back in
note that you may have to run it once first before adding the windows live workaround to properly activate it, it will still make you activate it AGAIN after modding it, but if you dont it wont start at all
If you use the default version of proton youll have extremely common crashes, but changing to 6.3.8 isnt straightforward, when you downgrade it initially wont be able to install the launcher (ive replicated this same behavior on pc arch and it was identicle) you have to install it via a different version of proton 6 (i used 6.21 GE 2) and then it will freeze during installation, youll have to hard reset. and then after hard reseting switch to 6.3.8 and it will complete installation without further issues, no more crashes at least not after 2+ hours of play so far.
After most recent red dead update proton 6.3.8 no longer launches, neither does 7.0.4, experimental installs, and runs, apears to work fully with no crashes so far (one hour of play so far)

use this fix on deck to end the crashing issue, will instead result in ocassional lag spikes, but much better than crashes, and the lag spikes are not common
jumped the gun on my previus report, just switching to experimental crashes on deck (although pc crashes are hardware dependant)
Only glitch i experienced was that it sometimes fails to display the correct controller controls (example when it initially tells you to open the menu it sometimes will say tab instead of the button) otherwize flawless and this glitch only happened once the first time i ran it. even then other controls were all displayed properly
have to edit the registry, and it currently doesnt run with experimental
Note: modding is a bit tricky, the easiest method would be to mod it on windows and then port your files over (merging your wire bash mods folder and any OMODS in manually so you dont have to use them anymore) you can mod it inside proton using proton tricks and running the various tools inside of the compatability prefix but that will be complicated for most users. if you know what your doing you could always mod it manually from the start which should work fine although that is much harder to debug.
Also renaming OBSE, Wyre Bash, or whatever launcher you like to use to OblivionLauncher will allow you to bypass the default launcher as an alternative to altering the registry
Oh and if your going to use loot inside the prefix get the 32 bit installer as the recources for the zip are not in the prefix by default so that will save you a bit of time. the 64 bit installer had trouble fetching the file and itll probably be more compatable anyway, keep in mind loot will not detect your install location by default and your going to have to type it out when adding it since hidden folders wont apear in its find menu
long as you dont want to mod it runs fine, and modding from scratch you may do alright if you dont mind modding manually one at a time
modding
After copying modds from my game on my arch linux desktop the game crashes on launch every single time, ive tried copying all my appdata and documents files relating to oblivion, ive tried changing to proton 5, heck ive even tried copying over my prefix (at which point it wont even launch), I dont understand what the problem is its running perfectly on my arch computer with the same files... if i remove all but base game and dlc it runs, so its not an OBSE issue... i must admit im pretty much at a loss, and i cant manage to get any programs (loot, wyre bash) to run in the prefix to do further testing, the commands wont run, various nonsense errors, mainly me not owning the file even though i do, dont know what thats about... other errors running as root... ulg
modding
Made left touchpad click act as the tilde key so i could access console easily
Increase Gamma to maximum so avoid turning up brightness and save some battery, averaging 3.5 hours without any other performance hacks at about half brightness
When modding be very carefull with your load order, small inefeciencies can cause saves not to load. if your used to running with a powerfull computer and just running loot its not gonna cut it. forums online can help with tightening up your load order.
also use xobse, and OBMM, rename the obmm launcher to OblivionLauncher.exe to replace the default launcher (name the old one something else), im not sure how well obmm works for installing mods on the deck but it definitly works as a launcher and lets you change/fix your load order easily without crashes.
if you can id mod on PC with wyre bash, and then copy your files over, and use OBMM's import export feature to transfer your load order as i had some trouble with it wiping manually copied load orders., also copy your documents folder to /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/22330/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/ note that the game will still use this compatdata folder even if its installed on the SD card
Highly reccomend bevelix's modlist for a more HD experience, or at the very least northern UI for controller compatability
Runs same as it would on windows best as I can tell.
Normal game issues with dlss and framegen not anything linux specific
so yeah couple glitches but entirely playable, if your not worried about controller than you wont even need to change any settings
fullscreen in this game is normally acomplished with F5 for a proper fullscreen, or alt+enter for an non-scaled fullscreen (game would remain same size but would black out the background
to accomplish proper fullscreen you have to use f5 first (getting an extremely glitched out window that doesnt display the game) and then alt enter. and if you exit fullscreen you get graffical glitches, and about a 50% shot at the game crashing, fullscreening this way in the first place may also make the game crash although it seems less frequent than when you unfullscreen
there is a community controller mapping but i had to tweak it for it to work, it seems like whomever made it had custom controls set up for their a and b buttons and didnt realize it so it maps them to different buttons than the default. easily fixed but very confusing if you see that theres a controller layout and suddenly you find you can semi control the game but not quite i thought something was broken for several minutes hehe
set launch options: -full -width 1920 -height 1080 -game Unofficial_Patch
If you don't set fullscreen and your resolution in the launch options then the game will launch but will be stuck in the top left corner, and will break completely when it reaches the home menu
Game works pretty well, not perfect, can install the patches by adding the patch installers to steam as non steam games and forcing proton.
-full -width 1280 -height 800 -game Unofficial_Patch
Mouse is visible when using joystick/touchpad to move screen. a bit annoying
Freezes and fails to close upon exit, so not exactly a major issue, just close from steam menu
Just a buggy game lol. nothing steam deck related
Current version of the unnofficial patch is working fine dont know why people are saying you have to use older version (at least as of now, maybe it didnt work before) game also runs on proton 6.21GE2 although it seems like the loading times are slightly worse
Native does not work, and it false blackscreens in plasma
Game apears to freeze on black screen, for some reason pressing ALT progresses you through the screens to the home menu
even with the extra launch option steam includes, has to be run with plasma, i got it working with 6.3, but it still blackscreens untill you interact with it in specific ways, odds are multiple versions of plasma work that i thought didnt after trying to run it on them.
clarification on my previous report, game works perfectly on proton 6.3.8, EXCEPT on every working version I've tried the opening clips before the menu stop at a black-screen until you press a key (spacebar/enter/alt) so it appears broken if you aren't expecting it, still haven't gotten native to run
id imagine most people play this game for the multiplayer so with that not working it is essentially unplayable for many users
sh mod, refer to dobe0331's post
attempting to open steam overlay minimizes game in multiple versions of proton that worked prieviously, upon fullscreening the menu apears but does not accept input
native does not allow any access to steam overlay
cannot access multiplayer with friends on steam due to it requiring the steam overlay which is not working as of now with native or the following proton versions (6.3.8, 7.0.3, GE 7.20, GE 7.25)
local play is working natively with the afforementioned mod to the SH script, dont know about local multiplayer, but multiplayer with friends is currently not working
