Dead Space is a flawed Windows conversion, but Proton has very few new issues to report.
System mouse cursor will not hide after restoring the window (minor bug). The game mouse cursor still functions as intended.
In-game VSync resulted in input lag and a subpar framerate far below 30 FPS. However, this behavior is similar to the Windows version.
Unlike other entries in the series, this game has no multiplayer component and no Origin implementations. It will run with relatively little hassle.
Be wary of existing port issues such as flawed VSync implementation and mouse sensitivity directly tied to framerate. A controller is highly recommended.
Like modern Windows, some compatibility issues-- otherwise an out-of-the-box playable experience.
DX1 works as well as it does on Windows-- it is an old Unreal Engine 1 game that's a little long in the tooth. However, the default DirectX renderer works as expected on Linux-- functional, but with some performance issues.
The GMDX mod is highly recommended for a faithful but drastically improved experience that rebalances and tweaks the game for the better (alongside HD textures and other improvements).
Using Wine, follow the instructions on this Reddit thread to install the GMDX mod, which only has a Windows installer and may not recognize Steam installations:
The basic instructions process may also work with other mods. Tested and confirmed working with GMDX installed on Ubuntu.
Quietly closes without displaying any window.
Attempting to install PhysX legacy drivers separately via Winetricks did not fix the issue.
Homefront 2 already has problems in Windows, but the Linux version is fully playable.
Many detail textures and minor light sources exhibit flickering issues. This does not affect the gameplay.
Frequent stuttering in certain conditions (e.g. highly populated areas), but most likely a result of the base game's existing issues.
I played the entire game start to finish while completing most (but not all) side content. I also played through Voice of Freedom, Aftermath, and Beyond the Walls.
Multiplayer was the low point of the experience with frequent performance dives, but not entirely unexpected given the hardware and existing performance issues. My character from the Windows versions synced and I played through Boom Patrol and Brownstone without any additional problems.
Other performance chokepoints include the Elmtree district, the Goliath mission, and the Beyond the Walls campaign-- essentially, moments where many NPCs are present. Again, this may not be a Linux issue.
I can also confirm that the TimeSplitters 2 Chicago/Syberia arcade works as expected, but did not finish the levels.
Playable, but still needs work. Video playback issues hurt the experience, but otherwise functional.
FMV video clips do not play in-game (replaced with black screen and no audio). This affects all infomercials and live action cutscenes.
The game initially had a freeze/lockup on startup, and appeared to freeze up several times while loading for the first time. After reaching gameplay, everything ran as expected and all gameplay seems to be intact.
The lack of video playback on TVs and your computer takes away from the humor and atmosphere of the game. However, this can be overlooked (particularly if the main draw is co-op anyway).
Proton Experimental was used to run the game (as of Jan 29).
Headache-inducing video player issues ruin the experience and strip away key story elements.
All videos are garbled. This includes the intro video as well as any use of video files in-game (such as television displays, the laptop from the intro, or the environment around Ethan's car up until he arrives at the house).
Only Proton Experimental (Jan 22; currently based on 5.13) could successfully launch the game; all other Proton versions reached an infinite loading screen after some basic setup options.
Only recommended if Windowed mode and/or lower resolutions are acceptable. This window can still fit the screen by clicking Maximize.
Improper scaling for UI and game window makes fullscreen mode unplayable.
Fullscreen at any resolution is entirely broken, and may even stop some users from launching the game for the first time. At lower resolutions, fullscreen will result in windowboxing at the upper left corner with broken UI scaling. At native, the game will be unresponsive and either entirely black or white (flashes of the intro videos can sometimes sneak past).
If encountering a black screen at startup, go to the game installation folder and modify ./data/DisplaySettings.xml with a text editor. Set the ResolutionWidth and ResolutionHeight variables to a lower resolution, then set Fullscreen to 0. Other graphics options can be changed in-game.
Performance is generally acceptable, but the highest Anti-Aliasing option is extremely demanding and should be avoided; this is the case on Windows as well.
Tested with the first hour of the main story as well as Nightmare in North Point.
(Reported experimental version: experimental_5.13)
Fix is included in "Proton Experimental" as of Jan 19, 2021.
Changing active windows will cause temporary performance problems; this fixes itself after a few seconds.
Proton versions 5.13-5 and below will either CTD immediately or fail to open the window altogether. Use a newer version of Proton with the MF fix applied.
