Borderlands 2 runs better through Proton than on native Windows or native Linux, likely due to DXVK. The Windows version easily hits above 144 FPS for me and feels smooth as butter.
I changed settings in the Engine.ini and GameUserConfig.ini files for more exact graphics settings.
Get "lag spikes" ingame
The game pretty much runs like it would on Windows. After editing two .ini files to my personal preference, I get a solid 144 FPS. I do sometimes get lag spikes during games, which undo the last ~3 seconds of gameplay, however this could be a server issue, even if I didn't experience it a couple of days ago on Windows.
Stuttering
The game runs perfectly fine with maybe some screen tear and stuttering issues. The latter can be fixed by turning off DX11 in settings.
The game runs completely fine OOTB.
Nothing really to say here, it runs at 60 just fine.
After installing multiple mods, the game ran very well. FPS was around 144 and the game looked great. For the brief time I tested it, I did not have any issues. I created a guide on steam for fixing this game both on Windows and Linux for anyone who can't get it running well.

I installed Living City, Windy City, and Disable Aim-Assist Mods.
After dealing with Ubisoft Connect, the game effectively runs out of the box. From my testing, it does not work with the latest ProtonGE, likely due to it conflicting with Ubisoft Connect.
I installed 3 mods using Gibbed tools. If you plan to mod this game with the loose files and want to merge mods, you MUST install XNA framework in Winetricks.
Performance is better than on Windows due to DXVK, with FPS dropping to ~70 at the lowest with both maxed out settings and a highly-intensive graphics mod.
