Multiplayer works flawlessly. Game runs as well as Windows. No tinkering needed, just install and play.
gamemoderun %command% -vulkan -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -cpuLoadRebalancing -ignorepipelinecache
Would crash in chapter 2 in Valentine when you take Uncle into town and he walks into the general store. Would crash every single time. Used launch options to fix it.
On the new Steam UI, if you have steam overlay enabled, the game would not load whatsoever. This is fixed by disabling the steam overlay in the game's properties on Steam.
The steam overlay crashed this game every time I would accidently shift + tab. Then the steam ui update happened and that caused the game to crash on the initial loading screen/opening cutscene. Disable the steam overlay for this game. No other users are really talking about that so maybe its just an issue on my machine.
Runs perfect OTB
Game runs just as well as a Windows install would. Recommend it to anyone that is interested in playing on Linux!
Windows runs better
Game plays just fine, very playable and enjoyable. Only gripe is that on Windows I get about maybe 200-250 fps on 1440p with minimal frame dips. On Arch I'm averaging about 130-160, with noticable frame dips. VSYNC on Linux causes noticable input lag. Overall, game is very very playable and enjoyable.
--enable-avpro-in-proton
Mirrors can really hurt performance (more than usual.)
As another user noted, the video players, or the majority of them, do not work OTB. Adding in --enable-avpro-in-proton in the launch options makes them work. There is definitely an audio desync for me personally. Pausing the videos in LS Media seems to lessen the audio desync but it is still there. If I read correctly, the other user is using PulseAudio and can not control the video player with the in game audio slider on the player. I am using PipeWire and am definitely able to use the slider. Same with the pause button lol (works on my machine!!). As to the memory leaking, again, another user said 1GB a minute. I definitely did not have 1GB a minute, but more like 100MB a minute. There is definitely a memory leak, I loaded into LS Media consuming 12GB of RAM. 30 Minutes in with 0 players leaving or joining, I am now using 18.5GB of RAM steadily climbing. This is more RAM than most players will have in their machine.
In terms of Movie Worlds, they all have the audio desync, but Movie & Chill does not load movies whatsoever. That world sucks anyways, nothing lost, nothing gained.
Finally, mirrors are a problem for me personally. In midnight rooftop, rest and sleep, black cat, and other popular worlds, turning the mirror on can potentially cause a 30-60fps drop and will make memory spike from a witnessed whopping 19GB usage to a unplayable 29GB usage. Not usually a mirror dweller peronsally, but reporting this issue because it doesn't happen on Windows, and a lot of people are mirror dwellers and this is a nearly game breaking bug that only partially fixes itself upon leaving the world. All in all, it is NOT uncommon for this game to take up nearly 20GB of RAM in Desktop for me.
Unfortunately, havent given it a try in VR because I have been busy lately. Will write another update in a few weeks/months.
Crackling occurred MORE for me on Proton GE 8.3 > Proton Experimental. Only occurs for the first few minutes of playing the game. Can't explain why lol.
Huge memory leak. Made even worse with --enable-avpro-in-proton
Game has a major memory issue. I've often found the game easily consuming 25GB of RAM in a 40 person world. Hiding all avatars brings it down to 15GB. On Windows, same exact world, people, and avatars. Used 20GB of RAM, and 10GB respectively. Using --enable-avpro-in-proton makes this ram issue even worse. I'm pretty sure its a bug with Proton though, not VRChat. Game is not playable in VR and I would suggest anyone looking to get into Linux and hoping for VR support, look elsewhere. If VR is a main selling point for you, stay away from Linux. It's not ready yet. Overall, game is playable (barely) OTB on Linux.
AV PRO PLAYER ENABLED BY DEFAULT
Setting the launch option --enable-avpro-in-proton in my case is now REDUNDANT in my testing because the latest version of GE Proton has these fixes enabled by default. The MAJOR issue with this is that there is 100% a memory leak in these media players. This can be totally avoided by simply going into a world that has a media player and DISABLING it for yourself. In worlds that you can not disable the media player, rejoining the world will reclaim a lot of RAM, but not all of it. At this current state using Proton Expirimental from Valve or GE Proton, this game WILL eventually RAM starve your PC and require a hard reboot if you do not handle the video players accordingly.
