Dialogue bubbles are tiny on the Steam Deck screen but not necessary for play.
Black screen after launch until I switched to GE-Proton9.10. Didn't have to do anything with DLLs.

As of today, default proton selection gives a black screen at launch. Change to Proton Hotfix and it works flawlessly

/borderless
Note that using the switch /borderless doesn't allow window mode and you'll always run the game in fullscreen. Alt-tab works fine.

Installed d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47
The game will not work at all without the Protontricks fix (black screen at launch). Tutorial for those who haven't used Protontricks before:
In desktop mode, search for and install Protontricks from the Discover store, then launch it.
Select Renegade Ops from the app list > OK.
"Select the default wineprefix" > OK.
"Install a Windows DLL or component > OK.
Tick the checkboxes for d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47 > OK.
When the next window appears, you're finished. Click the 'X' in the top right corner to close out Protontricks, then return to gaming mode.

Black screen without protontricks, game starts with d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47. Minor texture issues.

Black screen.
Only shows a black screen.

As others have said. I suck at this game even more with a controller than I did with keyboard and mouse on PC, but it does run quite well on Deck.
I have the Deck's refresh rate and frame limiter both set to 40.

If you have installed protontricks via the discover store, you need to set up a symlink
echo "alias protontricks='flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks'" >> ~/.bashrc
exec bash
first.
If you use fullscreen with in-game vsync, mission 9 crashes during the elevator ride. Switching to windowed mode and using the deck's own frame limiter fixed it.
Mixed controller+mouse/keyboard input (for example, controller steering+mouse aim) doesn't work.
Crashed during the elevator ride in mission 9.
Opening the splitscreen leaderboard crashes the game, but this problem also occurs on windows.
Installed d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47
A system update likely restored compatibility to where it was before. After using protontricks, either default Proton (7.0-3) or Experimental can be used to run the game.
A system update likely broke compatibility further. Without using protontricks, the game yields a black screen like before. With protontricks, the game crashes immediately. This is true with Proton 7.0-2 or GE-Proton7-17.

Black screen at launch. Installing d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47 via Protontricks just causes it to crash immediately.

Detailed instructions for a first-time user:
- switch to Desktop Mode
- install protontricks through Discover app
- launch Protontricks app
- select Renegade Ops in the list
- ignore WINEPREFIX 32bit/64bit warning
- choose "Select the default wineprefix"
- choose "Install a Windows DLL or component"
- select d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47 packages
- close Protontricks app
- switch back to Gaming Mode
- run the game normally
Out of the box, the game installs fine, but yields a black screen and nothing else upon launch. Using Proton Experimental or GE changes nothing.
The older reports indicated that using protontricks was necessary and which packages to add. Indeed once protontricks was used to install the missing components, the game not only launched properly but ran very well (consistent 60fps) with the default Proton.

black screen on start
Out of the box it does not run, black screen and no way to bypass without using other software.

If changing between Proton versions, it seem to be required to rerun protontricks.
Some artifacts in the grass, seems like transparency is not working as expected.
There seem to be an issue using Proton 5.x. I've only been able to run the game using Proton 4.x or 6.x

Initially does not launch at all. Using WINED3D11 and protontricks, launches to a blank screen.
Setting launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%" and running protontricks 99300 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47, as recommended by other reports, resulted only in the game launching to a blank screen.
Black screen, fails with error message sometimes, can bind mouse

protontricks 99300 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47

I used protontricks to install d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47. No launch options used.
Using Steam Controller and controller config set to "Gamepad with Camera Controls" and right trackpad set to "Joystick Move".

Black screen.

Enable D3d11 with PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 and install d3dcompiler "protontricks 99300 d3dcompiler_47" (or "protontricks 99300 d3dcompiler_43" , in case you have problems with 47, like it happen to me for some weird reason). After that the game works same as windows

Like the other poster mentioned, enable D3d11 and install d3dcompiler_47 (protontricks 99300 d3dcompiler_47). Played for about 30 minutes of mission 4, no issues.

Check that you use wined3d11. Install d3dcompiler_47 (protontricks 99300 d3dcompiler_47) After that game runs nice and smooth.

No worked

Crashes on start with ERROR E_FAIL.

Direct X error

tested with both DXVK and WINED3D11 and the /failsafe switch.

Crashes on start with DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED

Crashes on launch with a DirectX failure message

A small error window pops up saying only: E_FAIL

Only open a message windows with this error "E_FAIL"
