Played over 20 hours, seemed to work fine.
Works flawlessly out of the box, have not encountered a single issue

Takes a bit for the launcher to appear, but the game immediately boots beyond the launcher issue
Both 3D Remake and PSP versions are the best way to play FF4, with the PSP version the most superior version out of all FF4 versions.
Works fine overall, but I highly recommend the battle FPS patch since it'll run at around 15FPS in battle otherwise.
25FPS battle patch makes the game a lot more fluid
Set the right stick to joystick mouse to easily play while docked, otherwise just use the touch screen
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
As noted by others who have posted their reports, the launch options PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command% cleared up the audio issues of no audio in cutscenes for me.
used a mod to bring battles to 20 fps and set 40hz
Thanks to the steamdeck's display and the 20 fps battle mod, the game is finally in a way to properly play this like on the old DS. Frame timings are significantly better at 40hz and it "fits" the game a lot more smoothly than when it was running at 60hz. If you ever wanted to play the 3d remake, the steamdeck is the best way.
Had to change the controls to enable the right trackpad. You have to get through the launch window every time you want to play the game.
You still need to change the default boot option to Proton Experimental and change the control settings to get past the launch window, but those are the only issues now. The game is actually playable at this point.
Mouse input is required to get through launcher
Unless running proton 4.11-13, main menu music and sound effects are absent. Also music and sound effects missing from cutscenes.
This should not be verified. Mouse input is needed for the launcher everytime the game is run. Unless you use a specific older version of proton, game music and sound effects will be missing.
With tinkering Final Fantasy IV 3D is fully playable and enjoyable, albeit slightly compromised.
The initial launcher window can only be navigated with a mouse. In-game, controller input works as intended.
Game is initialized/configured through a startup launcher that can only be navigated with mouse.
Using the default Proton settings the opening FMV works fine but all game sound disappears afterwards. Setting compatibility to use Proton 4.11-13 fixes the missing sound but causes some audio desync.

No music when using proton 7.0-2 or 6.3-8.

Had to use older Proton to make audio work. Some cutscene audio were out of sync but nothing major.

After title video, main menu and the rest of the game has no music, no sound effects, just voice audio.
Tested Proton GE 7-16, Experimental, 7.0-2, 6.3-8, 5.13-6, 4.11-13
Right trackpad as cursor, click as left mouse click.
Music does not play

When the game is launched I can hear the music but there is no window for the game visible.
I tried every proton version from 5.0.10 to 6.3.8 and the latest GE and Proton Experimental.
The amount of missing audio renders the game 'unpleasant', even when it is 'playable' as such.
Regardless of Proton version used (in my case, and even recreating the prefix from a clean slate), ever since Proton 5, music audio is missing. Reports here suggested that using older protons (4.11-13 specifically) gave back the missing audio. I have tried that to no avail. After messing around with the prefix and installing components for Windows Audio (changing Windows version, forcing a 32-bit prefix, etc), my suspicions rest on the game's SDL2 files which I have not messed with yet.
Fixed with "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
".
The game is capped at 30FPS which, in my opinion, is not bad in these kinds of games. However, the battle scenes are capped at 15FPS, which is not OK. I fixed this with this guide. You can trust the posted .exe, I checked that they were the same that the ones I modified myself and they were. But, if you don't trust them, you can still patch it on your own with a hex edit (okteta is a nice one). This patch doesn't mess with cloud saves or with achievements, they both work.
Proton 6.3-2 has the same problem that the protons 5 had, you can hear the music during the opening but once the main menu shows up, no longer you can hear the music. You can only hear the voices. Using Proton 4.11-13 is still the way to make everything work.
I have a great experience, the game worked really well.
I have a audio problem when I played using Proton 5.13, songs and audio effects were often not playing, just the voices were playing, but not always, however when I turned to Proton 4.11 it worked perfectly.
Works like a charm out of the box using Proton 4.11-13
Launched without playing the opening music, subsequent restarts of the game fixed this
Game plays very well, not my favorite version of FF4. If you want to play it on Linux via steam, it works great out of the box. If you have any issues with your current version of Proton, try loading it up using 4.11-13, I can confirm that version works.
Plays just like on Windows. The D3D flag is also not needed; it works with default settings just fine.

Plays just fine. Controller is funky, but that's because Steam is funky. You would think that if they manufacture their own controller they would make it not be really dumb with their own software, but you would be foolish for thinking so.

Tested out sound, controller support, standard gameplay, all works perfectly.

The game runs great with cut scenes and fighting. The sounds is working great also! There is NO crashes!

Game runs phenomenally with no setup. PS4 controller works with Big Picture mode. Only thing that could even be considered an issue (which is relatively minor and not at all related to performance) is that the subtitle text in the voiced cutscenes has some minor text artifacting. Does not affect any text outside of gameplay. The 25fps exe hack also works with no issues as well.

No sound. Otherwise, the game works fine. Installed on Fedora 29. Scarlett 6i6 soundcard.

All cutscenes and battles ran perfectly. No slowdown, graphical or audio glitches. Did not test controller.

Runs perfectly after 3 hours. No issues so far. Low fps in battles are the default for this game, there are mods for fix this.

Battles a little slow. Controller randomly sticks down and pushing directional inputs seems to eventually stop it.

Tested 6h of gameplay (did not test gamepad)

BIt slow but stable

No issues. Xbox one controller works with game. Steam cloud save files accessible, resumed game from when last played on windows.

It's perfect
