Sweet game after all these years, but beware non 4:3 or 5:4 resolutions may break the intended FOV and scaling of 3D PIP and 2D icons.
Use protontricks to install Verdana font, then adjust the prefix settings in the same protontricks GUI to set a Virtual Desktop window.
After I set the Virtual Desktop, the game could trigger fullscreen in the settings and would behave properly. Next launch however the game would be in the window as per the protontricks settings. To get past this I bound "Toggle fullscreen" through my OS, and that works fine.
After toggling the mouse scroll zoom invert the game either only scrolls down or only scrolls up until you restart. I think I remember this from the Windows version TBH
In the end I didn't need to do the Alt+Tab thing described by others as I was running Valve Proton 8.0-4. This ran the intro videos fine. There are some high resolution fixes described here but in the end the game seemed to accept my 2560×1440@165 after chosing it in the options menu (refresh rate is hidden under "Troubleshooting"). Pretty cool game, with a really pastiche storyline and a thumping soundtrack. Worth.
Proton 8.0 displayed the launch screen correctly. Afterwards the game crashes showing an error saying that no 3D graphics card detected. Copying fonts in did not help for Proton 8.0.
It works with Proton 5.0:
- launch screen is white, but play button is visible
- had to copy in fonts as described by Gar0gin and LiveWireBT
- no alt-tab was necessary. It just worked
As per Gar0gin instructions the game needs the 4 Verdana font files to be in the ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/254840/pfx/drive_c/windows/Fonts/ directory. Otherwise it won't launch. Yes only these 4 files! verdana.ttf, verdanab.ttf, verdanai.ttf, verdanaz.ttf. How to get these leagally from official sources? It's an old game so not many people know about it now, but still enjoyable if there wasn't a need to copy over fonts from a windows computer
As advised by Gar0gin. Copy Verdana fonts to ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/254840/pfx/drive_c/windows/Fonts/. When the game loads, alt+tab out and back into avoid being stuck on the black screen

I copied them from the Microsoft fonts installed in the system - verdana.ttf, verdanab.ttf, verdanai.ttf, verdanaz.ttf to ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/254840/pfx/drive_c/windows/Fonts/
I fixed this in protontricks using the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option to minimize the game and switch between running applications
The game is stable. This also works on previous versions of proton 4.2, 4.11

Initial launch screen is white except "play" hyperlink, and multiplayer doesn't work (but multiplayer not working is also a Windows issue as well).
After pressing "Play" it shows a black screen for a few seconds and crashes
game crashes after clicking the "play" button in the launcher, which itself does not display correctly
Game launch shows without any styling, just a white window with hyperlinks. When attempting to start the game through the launcher it will crash nearly instantly.
