The only thing I will note is that I played using an old Rock Candy Xbox 360 contoller and the game showed me Playstation buttons but other than that, it worked perfectly.

only on native version
I think the native version is outdated (speculation), either way running proton was flawless. I had up to 4 controllers playing at the same time no issues.

SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 prime-run %command%
The game simply wouldn't start on native nor on Proton. After looking around for a bit and checking the game logs (/home/youruser/.local/share/Metanet/N++/NPPlog.txt) I noticed it was a windowing system issue.
The native version is a little old and won't run on newer versions of the Steam Linux Runtime, so you'll need to force 1.0. It also doesn't seem to run on Wayland, so you'll need to force X11 with SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 %command%
on the launch properties and use XWayland. After that, game runs perfectly.

--Borderless
Any resolution higher than 1920x1080 will cause the all-gold badges to not render among other weird graphical issues.
The game is known to have an issue corrupting saves so it is recommended to disable Steam Cloud and backup your save manually.
Windows: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Metanet\N++
Linux: $XDG_DATA_HOME/Metanet/N++
Outside of the noted bugs, this game runs amazing. It should technically work with Proton if you want to install mods using PSEnough but I did not test that myself.
gamemoderun %command%

Great game, just some minor issues when using either the native version or running it through Proton.
Using all default settings (including the default Proton version Valve enables through their testing), the transition that appears when completing an episode and returning to the main menu creates a flicker effect on the screen. Using the native Linux build resolves this issue but at the cost of A) making the outline of the level difficulties disappear when switching between sets like Intro, Normal, Hardcore, etc, and B) viewing the graphics options shows 1920x800, 89hz instead of your go-to 90hz screen if you have OLED. Gameplay wise, the game works the same, just these minor annoyances.
If using the native Linux build, the game detects the Steam Deck's control scheme as a PlayStation one. Switching to Proton fixes this. Not sure why this is a thing.
Saves are different between native Linux and Proton.
When initially installed, in the Game Details tab just under the Deck Verified section, it will inform you that Valve Testing has it set to use the latest Proton version as opposed to the native Linux build. Aside from minor graphical issues and a different save between versions, I cannot tell any differences regarding stability. Not sure what the root cause is.

Cloud saves with this game are really weird and don't seem to sync properly no matter what personally.
Make sure to install with proton, native linux just doesn't start.

You have to launch the game with Proton. Otherwise, it'll try to use the native Linux version which crashes before you even see the game open. But once you've done that, it works perfectly!

Default compat works, but I'd recommend Linux Runtime just for save synchronization between the Deck and desktop
By default my save game would not synchronize between desktop and my Steam Deck, switching to Steam Linux Runtime solved the issue
The only online functions of the game are the community levels and replays, both of which were operational and working fine
Couch co-op has no issues
As previously mentioned, I faced issues with synchronizing my saves, but forcing Steam Linux Runtime solved my problem
The game has a native Linux build that (I think) links to old versions of some libraries and doesn't launch out of the box. Running the build with Steam Linux Runtime works (Proton also technically works but Windows -> Linux translation isn't needed)
I tried attempting to run with the default proton build Steam gave, but it would refuse to start up into the game. Using the experimental branch however had the game start. Other than that, game works great out of the box.
Text is overly small. To be fair, the text is overly small on a larger screen as well.
I saw other reports that controls show up as PlayStation layouts. All of my devices show proper Xbox layouts.
Perfect platformer to play on the go, provided you can figure out the saves issue (assuming you have some hours on another machine)
Some text, such as the tutorial text, is a little small for the Steam Deck's display, and there is no in-game option for changing the UI scaling. Should still be able to read all important text just fine, unless you have uncorrected vision problems.
Game doesn't pull down saves from Steam Cloud, if you have saves on a PC you'll have to manually import the save file into your Deck each time you want to sync with your PC. Back up your save files no matter which platform you use, this game is notorious for corrupting save files out of nowhere, even after hundreds of hours of gameplay.
Game would soft-freeze when trying to launch using native client, had to completely restart the Deck in order to get it to close. Once I forced Proton 7.0-5, the game launched and ran perfectly
I think a typical gamer would be fine playing this title assuming they can remap the key prompts from PS style prompts to xbox style prompts
Game shows the playstation controls rather than the steam deck xbox-like controls.

Native build shows prompts for a PlayStation controller instead of the Deck's Xbox-style labels.
Leaderboard display usually displays the wrong rankings and sometimes the wrong scores as well.
Works amazing OOTB, only downside is that the button prompts are for Playstation controllers, so you have to do a little mental-conversion.
I have had no real issues running the single player version. I just clicked "Install" on Steam, and everything has worked. It's a fun game!
If you have the game set to display on a second monitor, and unplug the second monitor, when you try to start the game again, it will still try to display on that second monitor, giving a blank window on your main monitor. This can be easily addressed by ensuring that you change the game over to your main monitor while you still have the second monitor plugged in. I think it's technically a bug, but it takes like 2 seconds to change in settings, so I don't mind.
While I have not personally experienced this, many others have reported that their save game can become randomly corrupted, and they recommend creating backups with relative frequency. It seems rare, but it might be worth backing up your save semi-regularly.
Your save can be found at /home/YOUR_USERNAME/.local/share/Metanet/N++/nprofile
Runs flawless
Native version is broken.
It defaults to showing the controls in the UI as a PS4 controller instead of the Steam Deck's buttons.
Works totally fine and clean. Shows playstation button prompts but obviously that's not a real issue.
It will run using proton. otherwise it will crash
