Open winecfg with the folowing command: $HOME/.local/bin/thcrap_proton -- gamemoderun mangohud DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 DRI_PRIME=1 %command% then enable wine virtual desktop

The frezing on fullscreen doesn't happen on the default Gentoo kernel If the game didn't speedup then a normal gamer could enjoy the game if said gamer knows japanese. The speedup didn't happen before i enable wine virtual desktop.

Limit/lock FPS to 60, as gameplay speed is directly bound to frame rate.
thcrap auto-updater can be disabled if you want to play offline without it having to check for updates.

When using thcrap to patch the game to run in English, the default setting to keep the patcher running after the game closes prevents Steam from properly detecting the game has closed. See the instructions below for how to remedy this.
Some text is on the smaller side, particularly on the Deck's built-in screen. Still very readable to my eyes, but YMMV.
Game may crash if you select a resolution higher than the screen you are playing on. This is a bug with the game, not with Proton. I recommend choosing either of the Borderless options.
I used a thcrap standalone patch to get the game running in English, as there are some bugs that make the regular version difficult to get working properly. You'll need to be in Desktop Mode to set this up fully.
- Download the standalone patch for Touhou 18. Extract the contents to the game's install directory (alongside
th18.exe
and other game files). - Rename
th18_custom (thpatch_en).exe
tocustom (thpatch_en).exe
. This ensures launching the settings works properly with the custom launch option. - Set the launch options in the game properties to the string specified in this report. When you launch the game, the commands it executes will effectively "rewrite" the launch command Steam would normally issue to point at the patched .exe rather than the default.
- At this point, you should be able to launch the game through Steam and it will download the newest version of the patcher + patch files automatically, launching the game afterwards. However, I highly recommend you launch the game in Desktop Mode at least once before returning to gaming mode to disable the option that reads
Keep the updater running in background
. Otherwise, the patcher window will remain open after you quit the game, causing Steam to not fully recognize that the game has closed and forcing you to manually exit the game. Changing this setting in Gaming Mode won't work properly, as the patcher doesn't save changed settings if it is forced to close. Uncheck the box in Desktop Mode then click the X in the window titlebar to close it, and it should retain the settings on all subsequent launches regardless of mode.
Additional notes:
- I have not tested with other Proton versions, so I am unsure if Experimental is actually required for this all to work. I haven't noticed any issues using it so I haven't bothered to change it.
- If you have a different patch set you want to use (e.g. a language other than English), you may be able to use brliron's StandalonePatchesGenerator to create a suitable patcher .exe. Modify the instructions above as needed to reflect any differences in file names from the premade patches.

Works just as you would expect it to.
Sound effects are muffled and sometimes distorted due to bad resampling. Wine and Proton have this issue, but Lutris's builds of wine don't
On Steam, you can't launch thcrap and the ingame sound effects are muffled. I used Lutris with fshack to fix the sound effects issue and to use thcrap so I can play in English
The game itself works perfectly. Check your window resolution, edit some options in the Configuration Tool, add JP locale, and that's it.
Game crashes if you try to launch the game in a resolution bigger than your monitor and in full screen. Both the conditions need to be met, so launching in windowed mode or with a resolution smaller than your monitor in full screen is fine.
Important note: the base game has some issues with replay desync. This is a problem in the game, and is not related to Proton.

I also have inserted the command LANG="ja_JP.utf8" on "set launch options" to emulate the japanese locale, so the game displays the japanese characters then.
It runs just as good as native.

Running the game with Valve's Proton versions (5.13-6, 6.3-2, and Experimental) results in black rectangles being displayed instead of the Japanese in‑game text, presumably due to a font issue. No such problem happens with Proton-6.5-GE-2.
Setting launch options to LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%
with a Japanese locale installed fix the minor mojibake in the out‑of‑game settings. Note that the in‑game text displays fine, even without that.
