Black screen. Fixed by setting a virtual desktop in winecfg:
WINEPREFIX=/path/to/your/library/steamapps/compatdata/1025600/pfx WINEARCH=win64 $home/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton9-23/files/bin/wine64 'winecfg.exe'

Per default, it opens a window with black content. The fix was to set a virtual desktop in winecfg (tip: just set it to your monitors resolution). Open winecfg like this after you ran the game once:
WINEPREFIX=/path/to/your/library/steamapps/compatdata/1025600/pfx WINEARCH=win64 $home/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton9-23/files/bin/wine64 'winecfg.exe'

gamescope -f -w 1920 -h 1080 -- %command%
I had problems with the windowed mode. Fullscreen is working perfect for me
You should use Gamescope to play the game and add the following command "gamescope -f -w 1920 -h 1080 -- %command%"
If the game was running fine check if Your command is not looking like this "gamescope -f -w 1920 -h 1080 %command%"

Proton 5+ = Blackscreen; 4.2-9 or older = Main Menu, Steam not Recognized > Close
Had a Blackscreen in anything neewer than Proton 4.2-9, 4.2-9 or older allows to get into the Main Menu but forces closing the App "Fatal Error. Steam must be running to play this game"
May try a fresh version of Manjaro or Steam Native, may use Protontricks. For now it does not work - while the old BR CD and GOG version work.
gamescope -w 1920 -h 1080 -W 3440 -H 1440 -b -- %command%

Either black screens or instant crashing
Tried all the options listed below. Nothing worked. If not run in gamescope, game starts in a small box which only shows black. If run in gamescope, instantly crashes.

gamescope -f -w 1920 -h 1080 %command%
Without tinkering, on fullscreen the screen was "flashy" in the place where plasma panel was (by default: bottom of the screen). Running gamescope in launch options fixes it.
on Arch: sudo pacman -S gamescope
This game could be potentially working fine for someone else with different desktop environment, by just changing Fullscreen to 0 and writing correct resolution in Battle_Realms.ini located in game files.
Works by default out of the box on the beta branch of the game have not tested it for the stable version)
Alt Tabing in and out may make the game loose mouse focus
gamescope -f -w 1920 -h 1080 %command%
The game did not works out of the box from steam (In my case, it's just blackscreen). if you are in arch try running the game with gamescope.
sudo pacman -S gamescope
And set in the launch options like this.
gamescope -f -w 1920 -h 1080 %command%
change to match your resolution if then the game should works
did not work in my case without tinkering
Tried dll vodoo everything, but stuck at unresponsive black screen
Isn't playable, stuck at black screen even using vodoo like other mentioned
Tried DLL overrides, Prime render offloading, dgVoodoo2, no tinkering at all and everything leads to an unresponsive black screen.

No tinkering needed.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="D3D8.dll=n,b;D3D9.dll=n,b;D3DImm.dll=n,b;DDraw.dll=n,b" %command%
- Download
dgVoodoo v2.79.3
from http://dege.fw.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/ - Extract dll files in
MS/x86
to$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Battle Realms/
.
-- OPTIONAL STEPS --
3. Copy dgVoodoo.conf
to the same directory.
4. Open dgVoodoo.conf
, then set dgVoodooWatermark
to false
to avoid any watermark.
The game should be playable.
- If you get
Could not initialize display mode / Could not rasterize API
it is a good sign. Because the solution above worked. - if you get blank screen. Use the soution here https://ask.fedoraproject.org/t/gaming-on-fedora-nvidia-not-working/8280/17

Would like to try multiplayer feature in the future.

(Used dgVoodoo2) Download dgVoodoo2 here (http://dege.fw.hu/dgVoodoo/dgVoodoo/) Then copy pasted the .dll files from MS/x86 folder to steamapps/common/BattleRealms Then added the following flags on the launch options

I run the game at 144fps, never before that i achieve that

Won't run thru steam. Shows error for display with executable in fullscreen, while windowed only play sound and shows a black screen.
The game works fine with the GOG version and the 1.57.2 Zen Version
everything seems to work flawlessly with proton 6.3-5
(Used dgVoodoo2)

Alt-Tabbing or minizing the game will cause it to go blackscreen. This can be resolved if you use the dgVoodoo2 patch
Prior to 1.57.2, installing/using dgVoodoo2 was mandatory because of the FPS issues you encounter. Now you don't necessarily need it but you may want to still in order for you to resolve the window minimizing/alt-tabbing blackscreen problem.
You still have to use 5.0-10 instead of 5.13-6 because it still suffers from the flickering issues. Funny enough the issue does not seem to reflect on Proton-GE builds that are based on 5.13-6.

Fatal error. Steam must be running to play this game.

The game is playable now compare to default on 1080p but i do notice it's not as smooth as the GoG version using the 1080p widescreen hack.
It is not as unplayable as trying to run the game without doing the dgVoodoo hack. It's like the game became 30fps-ish? Can't really confirm because you lose the steam overlay when you do this.
If this turns you off, please use GoG instead.
I use 5.0-10 instead of the latest 5.13-4. I tested this with 5.13-4 first but i got problems with regards certain elements flicker while also causing a regression.
Possibly this is a 5.13 bug BUT 5.0-10 works fine.
I played the 1st to 2nd mission of Kenji and a quick 5 minute multiplayer match.
works like native windows application on single player, rating should be reevaluated using latest proton version
Had to turn resolution down to get a playable frame-rate. Consistently crashing in battles
Everything looked rough
Had to turn down resolution to get a playable frame-rate. Using playable loosely :)
Crashes during battles
The game is unplayable on Linux atm. The game struggles to even get to 30fps and that is even at the lowest resolution and settings
Everytime the game renders a UI, performance problems starts to occur. I tried switching to D9VK and all other hacks and sadly to no avail none worked.
If you want to play Battle Realms on Linux, the GoG version is your best bet for now, since that one uses the last 2001 build. The steam version has fixes and patch that the GoG version did not have, but the steam version is an alpha release anyways.
as i said with minimal resolution the max FPS I was able to get is 35-40 fps
lowest the resolution is better is the fps, the max I got is 35-40 FPS, still we will need to find a solution to play max resolution at a resonable framerate
The framerate makes playing this game really hard, I'll keep an eye open for any optimization method and add a new report when I find it.
Intense framerate drops whenever the UI shows up in game.

Game shows "Fatal Error. Steam must be running to play this game." on startup even though Steam Overlay works. Pressing OK closes the game.
Game used to work with Proton 4.11-9 + BR 1.54 but it no longer works with Proton 4.11-11 + BR 1.55. Not sure if the BR or the Proton update caused the regression.
Note that steam overlay works so I'm sure steam is linking to it.
Resolution is limited to 1280x1024
Did not work in Proton 4.2-9 but works with 4.11-9.
Game shows "Fatal Error. Steam must be running to play this game." on startup. Pressing OK closes the game.
Framerate is very low, not playable!
With lowest and highest Graphic-Settings max 8 FPS!
Performance very low!
It starts at 4.11-9, but the frame rate is extremely difficult to play, even at the lowest setting with a maximum of 8 FPS.
