out of the box it crashes after the splashscreen. protontricks 253230 -q d3dx9_43 d3dcompiler_43 fixes the crash. if you run an AMD GPU, install protontricks 253230 -q galliumnine for near native dx9 performance. running anywhere between 60-150 fps on a r9 270x on very high settings, nice performance! dialogue volume doesn't seem to work, the sound seems to stay at the same volume. all other volumes work fine. protontricks 253230 -q faudio didn't fix it either, but it might prevent crackling that other people have been reporting. steam overlay doesn't seem to work, but maybe it's because of gallium nine.
rename ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/BorderlandsGOTYEnhanced/Binaries/BorderlandsGOTY.exe to Launcher.exe and set framerate to unlimited from the in-game options. 120+ fps buttery smooth on a r9 270x on amdgpu drivers
make sure to use proton 3.7-8, especially when installing the game. newer versions break the install and have poorer performance. if you installed with a different proton version, delete ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/379720. this used to work flawlessly back in december, but for some reason I'm now getting weird white artifacts in scenes with particles. other than that, performance is decent - i can run at 120+ fps at 720p on a 6+ years old gpu
i run a pure alsa setup and initially it was showing a black window and crashing on startup, but after running protontricks 282900 xact it's all fixed. there's occasional minor audio crackling but it's rare and not an issue at all
