Played private games with friends - no issues whatsoever
I needed to disable the Steam Overlay to be able to interact with the game (right click game > properties > uncheck 'Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game' under General)

Worked and ran fine out of the box (base game, I have not tried any plugins). Ubisoft Connect appeared to be bundled with the game and did its thing with no intervention required.
