Unable to start even with the tweaks discussed in other reports

Ran mf-install as discussed in other reports here, and it didn't get past the initial dark screen.
I also tried deleting the splash screen videos in the game directory, and that didn't help. Following along the discussions in the game's Steam forum, the problem seems to be due to the game trying to play the video, but not being able to.
