I downloaded, played and completed the entire game including acheivements without issue on my Steam Deck. Additionally, the game does run on my Archlinux computer using the same settings as the Steam Deck without any issues.
Using the FALLOUT.INI mouse tweaks and the launch settings with Proton GE, this just works!
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 gamemoderun %command%
[Controls] fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0 fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0 fForegroundMouseBase=0 fForegroundMouseMult=0
Without tweaking I had these issues: Stuttering and frequent crashes (fixed with gamemoderun) No music, and other audio issues fixed with GE Proton and installing LAV Filters via ProtonTricks Mouse issues in GUI fixed with FALLOUT.INI tweaks.
Game runs on my hardware at Ultra with no issues using these tweaks! Played for over 8 hours, only one crash but I am pretty sure it's the typical Fallout 3 crash and not the Proton/Steam setup.
Steam says it's getting the game ready, and eventually it stops. Never get anything to show on screen.
This has come a long way, I think most gamers would enjoy playing this on Linux with the supplied tweaks.
PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 gamemoderun WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
Shadows are a little weird at times, but they don't ruin the gameplay experience.
In Windows, this game runs on the highest settings. On Linux, I have to run most of the settings at medium to attain 60fps.
No issues outside of already known issues with the game servers, which also happen in Windows.
I have been playing Fallout 76 since the end of last year, but primarily on Windows to start. I was unable to get the game working at any frame rate higher than 10fps at the time. I did recently upgrade from an aging GTX 970, that got roughly 60fps on average with low settings. I now have the 6600xt, but the change was not immediate. In the weeks leading up to and now shortly after the launch of the Steam Deck, I have noticed significant performance and stability. While I have to run the game at medium settings on Linux, it is highly playable, and I have not experienced any issues in the past week.
I did have to take some tweaks from other Proton.db users to get the game to work properly, but it was a simple copy/paste operation. The only issue I did experience, and others may as well, this game will not load off a drive formated as NTFS. The way that Proton works, it needs to create a symbolic link to the games folders, which simply doesn't work on NTFS drives. If you install this game on EXT4, it runs beautifully.
My current software setup to run this game: Arch Linux Steam (Native) Proton GE Wine GE
Launch Options: PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 gamemoderun WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
The options fix mouse issues, fullscreen problems and corrects the lack of audio.
Some of the text would have weird spacing or squishing, but nothing to make the game unplayable
Other than making the adjustment on the Proton version, it just works. Just use 3.7-8 like everyone else and it plays!
Errors about DirectX and will not load
I tried the default settings, forcing Proton GE 7-20 and forcing Proton Experimental. All 3 options gave the same error:
"Failed to initialize graphics. Make sure you have DirectX 11 installed, have up to date drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled 3D acceleration in display settings. InitializeEngineGraphics failed"
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
I was unable to start Toree 3D (or Toree 2 and Macbat 64 for that matter) without adding "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" to the launch options.
