The only crash I've experienced was selecting a car, viewing it, then getting in the car while viewing it.
There isn't a significant difference whether you tinker or not; I suggest using Mangohud for monitoring performance statistics.

I used Proton 6.3-8 with a UGREEN NVMe enclosure containing a 990 Pro. The game runs when I mount the drive under /mnt, but not when it’s mounted under /media- you may need to raise vm.max_map_count.
