Weekend Beta Works As Long As You Install Proton BattlEye Runtime First
Proton BattlEye Runtime required for online play.
This review is based on the "Weekend Beta" event held on 9-12 May 2025. The game will run without Proton BattlEye Runtime installed but will error out when trying to join a multiplayer server. Installing Proton BattlEye Runtime through Steam (it is not installed by default) fixes the issue and allows for unrestricted operation. The game does not require BattlEye while playing through the tutorial area.
"YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED" After Two Minutes Of Play
Game installs and runs ok after using protontricks to install the d3dx9 DLLs and corefonts package. However, I end up getting disconnected (with the "YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED" screen) and kicked to server select after about 2 minutes of play. The in game network monitor (F11) does not reveal any connection anomalies before getting disconnected. In addition, the mouse cursor is slightly offset from its actual position on screen.
Unable To Start Game Due To Anti-Cheat Error
This game used to have a "Platinum" rating (using the "GloriousEggroll" Proton release) and ran as well as any native Linux game. However, a recent update added Easy Anti Cheat and now the game will no longer start a match from the main menu. Attempting to start a game results in a message titled "Anti-cheat error" with the text: "Anti-cheat is not initialized."
Always Crashes With A Runtime Error On The Initial Accessibility Menu
The game always crashes with a "runtime error" on the initial "accessibility menu" start up screen.
The game works as well as it would on a native platform. I experienced no bugs or issues when playing through the tutorial.
Added "dxgi.customVendorId = 1c06" to: ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/STAR WARS Battlefront/dxvk.conf
Out of the box, the game will error out with an "unknown video driver" message on AMD Radeon based systems. To bypass this message and play normally, add the line "dxgi.customVendorId = 1c06" to the dxvk.conf file (normally located at "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/STAR WARS Battlefront/"). This bypass was tested with an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT.
Instantly Crashes To Crash Report Handler
Installs normally. Launching the game leads to a screen entitled "Crash Report Handler" which reads: "The applicdation has encountered an unexpected error. / You can choose to create a memory dump, which will aid our support team in diagnosing your issue. / Send this dump to [email address]. / Dump started... / This OS has outdated debugging utilities, please download an updated version: [Long Microsoft URL To 'X64 Debuggers And Tools-x64_en-us' MSI File] Failed." There is no way to proceed past the "Crash Report" dialog. The Proton-GE and Proton Experimental test results were identical (both crashed).
