I had to delete and re-download steam play compatdata for this title, otherwise it would not launch at all. This was probably due to me running it with the wrong proton version in the past. Anyway, after it re-downloaded the required dlls it worked perfectly. I expect it would have no problems on a fresh installation.
I previously could not get this game to run at all. It started working today after I messed around with re-installing SteamVR. Runs great except for the issue with controllers disappearing that others have mentioned. That is avoidable though, just try not to open the steam menu in game.
With Xbox controller, to make the game playable with dpad instead of analogue stick, use xboxdrv with the --dpad-only option. Full screen mode cuts off the health bar at the bottom of the screen but window mode works perfectly. Does not work with Proton 4.11-1 but 4.2-9 works fine.
Must override the recommended Proton version to fix the terrible performance. It runs perfectly with 4.11-5 - no slow downs after flying all over the world for half an hour.
