It's getting better
As of Proon 7.0-1, I can at least get to the title screen and interact with all the menus...except for starting a new game. In prior versions of Proton, the game would immediately crash for me as soon as I finished or quit out of the opening cinematic. Now, upon starting a new game and picking a faction, the screen goes black and the cursor disappears. No error message is shown and it is up to you how long you want to stare into the void.
The title screen has CPU-bound animations that look super funny on modern hardware, but that's not a Proton issue. I've defintiely seen that happen running this game on anything other than the Pentium 4 I first played this game on.
Cursor goes missing as soon as you start a scenario
As mentioned before, the game is unplayable as without the cursor. I cannot save or click on anything as soon a scenario starts.
Honestly, the Proton experience is better than I've had with some newer versions of Windows. I distinctly remember having major compatibility issues on anything after Windows XP back when I had this game on CD (and used Windows regularly). I distinctly remember that most text fields (like prices and options) struggle to render on newer Windows versions. That was not the case in Linux/Proton. If the cursor rendering issue gets solved, I think the rest of the game will work fine.
