I simply clicked "Install" and it works. Performance is a bit lower than on Windows. In Windows I used "Very high" preset to get 60 fps, in Linux I have to use "High"
Monika fails to read the real system username. She the the wineprefix username. She calls me "steamuser". It's really sad :(
Sometimes there may appear problems with your cursor. If they appear just set the cursor to "Windows" in game settings. It will eleminate the problem permanently.
I played a lot and found the graphics features that slows down the performance very significantly compared to playing on Windows:
-- NVIDIA PCSS soft shadows. Causes severe slowdowns when going near trees.
-- Ultra reflections. Drops FPS severely.
Other settings can be set to ultra values without a problem.
Incorrect depth of field in some cut scenes
Manages to get 50-60fps on Maximum RT preset with occasional drops to 45-50 in certain environments with a lot of RT shadows. Ray tracing works without issues. Frame time is stable. Can easily reach 144Hz if settings are lowered to High preset
The problem is that by default Steam installs the version in your language (Russian in my case). If I simply try to run it it opens settings and the game won't start.
Here is how I solved the problem:
Go to settings (right-click on the game in Steam) and change language to English;
Start the game just to check if it works this way;
Exit the game than change the language to yours (Russian or else);
Start the game. Then it works perfectly with your language.
In general it runs perfectly. Yet you might want to turn off "Sky reflections" setting. Under Windows it causes freezing, under Proton it causes fps drops from 60 to 40-45. It's noticable. Also it won't close. I have to CTRL+F4 it. And again in Windows I have the same issue. Audio works perfectly out of the box. In general it works as good/bad as under Windows. All bugs are in place.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%
Sound crackling fix: PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60
D3D12 version occasionally crashes in Gwent, D3D11 version is recommended as it provides perfect stability, not a single crash after switching
Works perfectly out of the box except hairworks. If you turn it on, Geralt is bald. Looks hilarious. Performance is rather good. I get around 40-45 fps with a mix of high and medium settings on my 1050 Ti. So far it is one of the best games for Proton. Performance impact is not too bad and game doesn't require additional tweaking.
