Immediate crash
TRIED (but did not work) PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Program opens for a split second before close so I assumed it was a video initialization error. Tried PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% as suggested in earlier protondb reports but that did not work. After opening the game with PROTON_LOG=1 %command% the game crashes on this line specifically. Unhandled exception: page fault on write access to 0xc8459ac8 in 32-bit code (0x06a9c064).
The game is on an EXT4 drive, in a folder I own with write access of course. The separate launcher works but I tried both fullscreen and windowed to the same result. Tried it in a 32bit wine prefix but it still gives the same error. Its beyond my understanding of Linux to fix. Detailed log for a normal launch no launch options here, its the same error for WINED3D. https://pastebin.com/4CKiJcZd
PROTON_OLD_GL_STRING=1 EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2008 __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command%
Visual corruption without launch options.
The mouse will veer up and generally feel awful which can be fixed using RInput. https://fearless-assassins.com/files/file/1656-rinput/ Download RInput, put it in your game folder. Then to run RInput on launch, install Steam Tinker Launch https://github.com/sonic2kk/steamtinkerlaunch Once Steam Tinker Launch is setup and you launch the game, a new window will appear. Press "Main Menu" and then "Game Menu". Under "Custom Command" add RInput.exe and select "Fork custom command". Under "Wait for custom command" add however much time you would need to write "CoDSP.exe", because RInput will launch with a command line and requires you type exactly the .exe name (capitalization matters). I use 20 seconds to give me plenty of time to remember what I am supposed to be doing. After all that, RInput will hook to the game and it wont feel awful.
Does not allow you to create an account
You need to set up an account IN GAME to use the Steam version. You cannot use the website to set up your steam version account, it will not let you. What happens is the game crashes immediately after you input your CD key and press validate or whatever. You are then sent an email with a code that you cannot input, because assumingly the next page after the crash would be where you would put it and restarting the game restarts the whole process. I don't doubt the game runs fine after this bullshit but most people must have already had an account before switching to Linux and I don't care enough about this game to go through the process of reinstalling Windows just for some chance at playing it in Linux. Refunded
Runs better than Windows for me, and while videofile cutscenes don't work the actual ingame rendered cutscenes work. Worth a shot
Cutscenes missing, and ingame tutorial images replaced with colorbars
"The video is using Media Foundation, which isn't currently supported in WINE/Proton. The current workaround is to show colorbars (before it would crash when trying to play)." Quote from searching the error message in terminal. I assume this could be fixed by installing some MF binary or something into the games wineprefix but I haven't bothered yet
Crashes on start
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
With no launch options or with Proton GE, "Failed to initialize graphics" fatal error. With the PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% launch option, it gets to a crash uploader. It seems like the game breaks every few months
