If you don't add PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 to launch options, experiences significant, frequent stutters which freeze the entire system, not just the game. Using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1, vast majority of the stutters go away, and the issue becomes negligible stutters every 10-20 mins ish

With proton experimental, game locks up completely at main menu

Had to switch proton version, didnt really have any issues after moving to Proton 6.3-8, though the game defaults to "Low" graphics preset and the deck can manage "Medium" just fine, and which looks much better
