Input is set to controller only if you are playing from Steam Deck. Keyboard and mouse input is DISABLED and CANNOT (as of writing this review) be enabled, even if you have keyboard and mouse connected to your deck.
I did not enjoy playing it with controller only input mode. It's possible (and unmodded game is fully controller supported), but it is not enjoyable.
Proton-6.15-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Pretty much works out of the box with recent GloriousEggroll Proton versions. No performance issues or glitches when running a game itself, but launcher causes headaches from time to time. Some issues I've encountered:
If you are not using GE Proton, make following changes to the config files before the first launch: In FFXIV_boot.cfg 'Browser 0', in FFXIV.cfg 'CutsceneMovieOpening 1'.
Sometimes, launcher refuses to run initially, so I need to press Play in Steam twice. Didn't figure out why it happens yet.
I also had a problem with DX11 not running: turns out, there happens to be a bug (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/69289?project=1&string=amdvlk) when both RADV and AMDVLK are present on the system. Solved the issue by uninstalling AMDVLK for now.
Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF
If you are a new to this game, or a returning player, a game will likely show you a tutorial upon launch. The video in that tutorial does not work under Proton 5.0-7, resulting in the black screen. This issue is fixed in Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF.
The game runs horribly out of the box (3-10 fps in battle), but I've managed to fix this issue with the use of popsUlfr's Proton build (Proton 3.16-6 Gallium Nine Extras 0.3.0). After that the game has pretty good performance.
After some time, though, I've experienced crashes and textures not loading - turns out the game has been running out of memory. This can be fixed with the large address aware.
After all this I played for ~5 hours and haven't experienced a single major issue.
-nojoy -nosteamcontroller
Experiencing issue with sprinting and main item action since last update. Common workaround (using -nojoy and -nosteamcontroller launch options, disabling steam input and pressing buttons/triggers on the deck itself) stopped working. Tried both with latest GE (GE-Proton8-27) and Proton Experimental - no luck.
Overall, the game runs smoothly, there are no significant issues other than the trigger button mapping on Steam Deck.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp.dll=n,b" %command%
If you are still experiencing problems with main item action/sprint and are not planning on playing using gamepad - you need to rebind gamepad's controls for those. Change them from left/right triggers (default keybinds) to some other buttons. Seems like the game does not recognise them properly with Steam Deck.
