Customizations:Protontricks
I was able to make the game run using protontricks. Since I had an old version of winetricks, I had to download a new one as described here.
Then I ran protontricks 368370 ffdshow l3codecx winxp directshow and used default settings in the ffdshow installation. I tried before with custom settings and it didn't play audio.
When I selected "Steam Linux Runtime" as the compatibility tool in the game's properties, Steam just downloaded an empty (0 bytes) game. I had to select Proton to make it actually download the game.

Using default settings, the game had low FPS and couldn't unlock achievements. Using Proton 5.13, the game was as good as native.
