Used the command listed by other users: "WINEPREFIX=${HOME}/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/8800/pfx/ winetricks d3dx9 msxml3 msxml4 vcrun2003 quartz devenum corefonts lucida tahoma"
Game launches fine without tweaks. Once you reach the point where the world map is centered, screen/map goes black. As other users have mentioned, using the msxml3 workaround fixes this. Haven't had any issues since.
Couldn't get game working with Proton, Native Linux works with one fix
Could not get game to work through Proton.
Native Linux version works with one easy fix re the gameguide launcher: go to steam/common/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/ and in the "Civ6" file and edit line "./GameGuide/Civ6" to "./Civ6Sub".
Found this on a Steam forum - and now the game runs perfectly for me (played for a few hours no issues). Thought I'd share here in case it's helpful for anyone!
