Download Proton-4.21-GE-2 from https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases and put in your .steam/root/compatibilitytools.d folder. Restart Steam and "Force use" in the properties and play. I had everything turned up but motion blur and hardware Physx.
Had everything but Physx maxed and motion blur off. Was using Proton 4.11-12.
Replace mafia2.exe with this one (https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjAOLXh0xtmCgfAoztroDiFYfd3ooA) and enable D9VK
Use PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 as a launch command for better performance.
Some stuttering every few frames, but completely playable.
Edit videoconfig.cfg if starting in fullscreen and rename mafia3.exe to launcher.exe. After initial stuttering, game ran smoothly.
The game started in black screen had to edit the videoconfig.cfg file in .steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/360430/pfx/drive_c/users/ steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/2K Games/Mafia III/Saves/ Change the value to 0 0 Your Resolution 0 0 0 0.
Does crash every 1-2 hours, so if you can deal with restarting the game often, go for it.

After 30 min- 1 hour of playing or if you bring up the Steam Guide too often, your in game radio will cut out and in game sfx might cut out too.
If you use Fullscreen it will work, but if you exit, upon next boot it will black screen.
You will know when the game is about to crash. Your car might go through the floor or all the textures will be very degraded or muddy. After that happens, you have maybe 10 minutes to save, exit and restart the game.
If you use a Steam Controller or device that uses the Steam Controller interface the controller buttons will fail to appear and instead give you a black box. This doesn't affect gameplay, just makes it annoying.
Proton-6.14-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Protonfixes and Protontricks were installed, but not used.
Crashes on startup on Proton 4.2. But when run through Lutris with DXVK enabled, it runs perfectly with some minor frame drops when first loading into the game world.
