both the latest update and the old unity version beta branch did not boot without crashing.
tried proton experimental and an older version of GE
this sucks
runs perfectly except for crashing when losing focus (alt+tab, or even just pressing the windows key in GNOME)
game freezes permanently whenever it loses focus
Heavy graphical glitches in most menus
Extreme graphical glitches with most menus, gets worse over time to the point of being unplayable
This was on the live Horizons (not Odyssey) version of the game. I haven't tried any tinkering to fix this so you might have more success than me
microphone randomly stops working between loads, needs to be switched to a different input, then replugged physically, then switch input back. sometimes this stops working and the game needs to be restarted. extremely annoying for a game so dependent on voice chat.
see audio section
title screen loads but runs at 10 fps, trying to load into story mode shows the pre-rendered cutscene but goes white and freezes after
had to increase resolution in settings because in-game settings menu crashed when the resolution got too high
can't play :(
now that the game servers are shut down, you won't be able to earn steam achievements
was initially unable to get past EA app and directx setup install step. unfortunately i don't know exactly what fixed this - after upgrading from Fedora 37 to Fedora 39, it started working
Crackling stopped after the first play session and hasn't come back
After playing a few times, the game started crashing on launch with a memory access error. I fixed this by switching proton versions.
I switched to Proton 7.0-4 because it was the latest Proton that wasn't Experimental. It is not a custom Proton version but it wasn't an option while making this report so I entered it as custom.
In my laptop's power saving mode, the game runs terribly when there are a lot of sprites on screen. This laptop is awful for gaming so that's not unexpected. The only place the game lags when in performance mode is in the room with Looks To The Moon (sorry, can't find a way to mark this as spoiler), which is a safe area so it doesn't matter much.
gamemoderun DXVK_ASYNC=1 LFX=1 %command%
enabled "force pointer capture" or something like that
The item selection wheels did not work by default - the protontricks thing fixes that.
The game seems to leak VRAM - the game's performance slowly degrades until it is unplayable due to large spikes when performing actions like shooting or being shot.
Works great except for the need to restart the game every so often to reset the VRAM usage. It's fine if you can put up with that.
Using protontricks, install the "xact (x64)" dll to fix voice line audio. I changed the configuration file to remove mouse acceleration, you can look up how to do that.
Voice audio is missing until xact x64 is installed. DO NOT use the "SSE Engine Fixes" mod, it will mess up your audio (voices and combat sfx will be delayed for 10+ seconds)
Some notes on modding:
Use Vortex mod manager installed through Lutris using the official install configuration. Set your mod staging folder as a folder inside the game folder to fix the hardlink deployment. DO NOT use the "SSE Engine Fixes" mod, it will mess up your audio.
Use these launch options to launch SKSE without having to rename executables (which breaks some weird script mods I think):
$(echo %command% | sed -r "s/proton waitforexitandrun .*/proton waitforexitandrun/") "$STEAM_COMPAT_INSTALL_PATH/skse64_loader.exe"
I had to use a custom proton version for these launch options to work but otherwise didn't have any reason to use a custom version.
If you only want certain Creator's Club content (since the game normally enforces either all of it is installed or none of it), you can just delete the other Creator's Club files in the Skyrim Special Edition/Data
folder. Use this wiki to map from mod name to filename (e.g. the Camping mod is called firewood
in the files.): https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Creation_Club
Unable to launch game even with NorthstarProton
Without NorthstarProton (fork used for Titanfall 2 Northstar custom servers community), the game hangs on installing the EA app. After installing it, the game just doesn't launch but steam counts as running.
