On the lowest possible settings the performance was still unsatisfying
While playable on the current default Proton version, the problems it had made me switch to another system.
After about 20 hours of runtime (interrupted by putting the system to sleep) the game started running too fast, at 45 FPS. This made the FMVs desync as the audio was still playing at the normal speed. Restarting the game fixed the issue.
It might be a problem with the game itself and not related to Proton, but I can't find any conclusive info online.
After a couple of hours playing Vanilla I decided to switch to the New Threat mod. I installed it through wine without any hassle and it runs just as well as the base game did.
Silent crash after a few seconds. No windows displayed. Tried several flags, no dice.
Music loops on a single note after a few seconds. Sound effects work, but some, most notably the birds, keep looping after playing once. It can get annoying. This can be temporarily fixed by turning ingame sounds off and back on, but it won't last more than a few minutes.
Savegames are defaulted to a directory deep into steamapps, but when loading a game from the main menu it points to ~, forcing the user to crawl through the tree. A symlink should fix this.
Very rare on loading, appears similar to the unavoidable crash that happens when running without tinkering beforehand. No crashes during gameplay.
All the adjustments I have made were taken from the other reports I found on this page. I didn't expect to have to write such a detailed report and I couldn't remember every single thing I had to do. Regardless, it's all there in the other comments.
