MS .NET 4.0 (DOTNET40) install hangs indefinitely. In Wine, you can simply delete the UE3Redist, add XAPOFX1_5.dll, install xact and d3dx9_43 and it will work just fine, but this fix does not currently work for Proton. Attempting to install xact, d3dx9_43 and dotnet40 using winetricks simply fails. Winetricks reports that dotnet40 cannot be installed, then reports that it DID in fact install, but does not work.
Works perfectly well using Proton 6.3-2, no issues beyond the infrequent crashes mentioned.
The game will crash instantly if you attempt to enter the Graphics or Advanced Graphics sections of the Settings tab in the pause menu. A dialog would appear claiming that a DX10/11 compatible graphics card could not be found. The only way I could alter my graphical settings was to enable the landing page. Settings could be altered from here without any crashes, but not after the game has loaded.
Also experienced very infrequent freezes and crashes after 4+ hour play sessions.
I had initially launched the game using Proton 5.13-6 (under advisement of a previous report), which worked just fine. However, after using 5.13-6 for a day or so, I suddenly couldn't connect to Rockstar Games Services on launch, and it would time out after a minute or two and offer a support link instead. Switching to Proton 6.3-2 fixed this and I have not seen the same happen since.
Reducing resolution and enabling FSR 1.0 Balanced should allow you to play without the signficant drops.
gamemoderun %command%
Massive FPS drops (from over 120fps to approximately 4fps). I had to drop from 1440p170 to 1080p120 and enable FSR 1.0 Balanced in order to not experience these prolonged, painful slow downs. FSR Balanced at 1440p exhibited identical issues, and resolution reduction without utilizing FSR Balanced also didn't yield any improvement for me. Only the combination of both made the game usable.
Multiplayer technically works, and no other players (WIndows) were affected, but the intense and frequent FPS drops made the game near unplayable until it returned to normal. It would then be fine for a minute or so, before another substantial drop to below 10fps for several minutes.
It's worth noting in conclusion that there may well be other combinations of video settings which would yield a similar or even better improvement than those I've used to combat the painful FPS drops, and that I simply stopped testing settings when I found what worked for me that I could comfortably live with. I may experiment further in the future, because I would like to utilize my monitor's native resolution at 120fps+ as I was doing perfectly well prior to the latest Progression release. It's also worth noting that five hotfix patches have been released since the initial v0.9.0.0 Progression update (up to v0.9.0.5 as of time of writing), and none of these have yet fixed the issues I've experienced.
It's also worth noting that I haven't tried any combination of launch options in Steam to combat the issues (besides gamemoderun, which I use for most games by default), either, as I wanted to find a solution in-game before looking further afield. Since I feel I've achieved this adequately (for now), I felt no need to test launch options, but you may wish to look into what's available with those options if no combination of settings in-game makes the title playable for you.
If I had to guess what the actual issue is, I would wager it's the new version of the Unity Engine used in the update. The development team noted in their Progression update announcement that they'd updated the game to use a newer version of the engine for performance improvements, and it may simply be that this newer revision doesn't yet play too well with Linux. The friends I play this title with all use Windows, and have experienced none of the issues I've had since this latest update was launched.
Game is multiplayer only, and works perfectly.
No issues whatsoever for me. No tinkering needed at all, just worked instantly. Played with a friend who was on Windows 10, and everything was completely fine.
