I am using Steam from FlatPak to see how this game worked. At first it didn't work but after fiddling around with FlatSeal giving access to all my data in home, it's working perfectly. So both the standard version and the FlatPak version of Steam don't run the game because it doesn't have access to any files.
However with FlatSeal it's all fixed.
