game 'launches' to black screen.
clicking will reveal the mouse cursor, but, it can not be moved. no sound plays and screen remains black. will try various tweaks, if any work, will report back.
edited ini to fix mouse
fixed with edit to ini file
game runs slower than on windows on same hardware when turning/moving
game itself is unstable at times, does not crash any more often than with windows; may require system restart after game refuses to exit properly.
Outright does not work. Dosbox steals the mouse and while the second Dosbox window can be closed using alt-f4, the primary command window can not. Had to use the keyboard super key to get into system monitor and shut the program that way.
none
runs if you launch lords.exe with wine. lotr1launcher.exe (which steam points to) does not work properly.
visuals not working (am not smart enough to tweak things) but my graphics drivers are a bit out of date [am not smart enough to update them] however the sound appears to work and from that its clear the game does play as it responds to clicks properly, I just can't see anything as all it gives me is a black screen.
tested with updated drviers and same problem from earlier; blank/black screen. Game does play as evidenced by sound, but nothing can be seen.
game no longer works after latest update without tweaks. have not checked with tweaks yet.
Update to earlier report: Updated my drivers, updated my proton, updated my steam, tried every tweak; game simply no longer works. You can fire it up, but can not play. Even loading a game does not work; it will show the character you are loading, but crash before loading completes.
Game still does not play (addendum to previous reports)
I figured with both the new reporting system and the steam client update I would try again to get the game working; it does not work, and refuses to play, showing only the main menu, and crashing before the game begins.
Opening videos don't play (just click the mouse on the screen a few times until the opening menu comes up). Did not get far enough to check in-game videos, but they likely also do not run; they can be disabled easily in the in-game menu. In-game events without videos play fine. DLC prestige options also work fine, even when changing prestige.
Warning to those running this native: ensure drivers are up to date. Game works fine for me, now. When my drivers were not fully updated, I could only see the menus and nothing else.
terrain vanishes with settler or city on screen
The screen resolution tweak works fine; prior to doing this I could not get past the main menu into the game. However, upon getting into the game, the terrain turns black whenever a city is on screen or a settler is selected. According to winehq bug 41930, comment 20, this can be fixed by updoing gdi32.dll patch 142496389504205 and the if statement it added. Unfortunately, doing so is beyond my technical knowhow, and as such, the game is borked.
Used as my first test of proton to see if proton works; game loaded same as it did on windows, quick, with all loading screens visible; sound and graphics seem identical, no differences noted between windows and proton with this game.
Runs perfectly out of the box; I personally see no text errors.
