Doesn't load into gameplay if ray tracing is enabled. Game freezes after the loading screen and I have to pkill
the process. I've tried using GE-Proton7-37 but still no joy. My distro doesn't yet package the latest available nvidia driver, so maybe a more up-to-date version would fix this.
DLSS only seems to be available in the graphics options if VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11
is present in the launch options. Using PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0
alone didn't seem to enable this.
There are the usual shader compilation stutters but they're brief and infrequent, and importantly, don't seem to happen during combat.
Overall, I find the game to be fairly well optimized and it plays really well.
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPI=0 %command%
Sometimes get slightly awkward camera drift when entering into dialogue with NPCs. This may just be the way the game is normally (never played it natively on Windows so I don't know).
Considering the age of this game, I expected to be able to set all graphical options to their maximum. I was disappointed to see FPS drops into the mid 40s in built up areas such as downtown Boston. However, I've learnt that the Shadow Distance setting is the killer, here; Seems to very CPU intensive. Setting this to Medium gives much better performance, and isn't really noticable.
Occasionally just crashes back to desktop. Very infrequent, but annoying all the same.
I would recommend using vkBasalt if you can (ENABLE_VKBASALT=1
). It gives the visuals a nice, subtle uplift.
Generally runs great but has slight stability issues. Ubisoft overlay can be problematic
The Ubisoft Connect overlay initially showed a pop-up that reported my GPU driver was out of date. This remained on-screen so I had to disable notifications in the overlay. However, this took a couple of attempts because the overlay either glitched, or didn't close properly. I had to force close the game when this happened. Once the overlay is disabled the game works fine.
The game occasionally slows to a crawl (~ 5 FPS) after reloading a checkpoint, or after fast travelling. Only a restart of the game will resolve this.
Ubisoft overlay and slight stability issues aside, the game runs really well and looks fantastic at higher settings.
PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr,dxr11 mangohud %command%
Overall, I find the game works flawlessly.
It suffered the typical UnrealEngine shader compilation stutters for the first few seconds of a new map, even after letting Steam pre-process the Vulkan shaders. This is just a common trait of UE4 games, I guess.
I don't find there to be any performance difference between DX11 and DX12. Both seem to perform equally as well.
The PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1
launch option is required to access the Mods section. Without this I was getting an error about the Mod SDK not being initialized.
A word of caution for those wondering whether to purchase this game in Early Access: Void Interactive's FAQ section has the following ominous comment...
Q: What AntiCheat does Ready Or Not Use?
A: We’re currently looking into appropriate Anti-Cheat solutions
I hope this doesn't end up excluding Linux players after the 1.0 release!
