Using the AMDVLK driver, Proton 9.0-2 and the launch options as indicated made it playable in my ancient machine with only minor stuttering

Entering the Pause menu while using the stock Mesa drivers would be a FPS roulette when returning to the game. You would get anywhere from 2 to 60fps and it was always random. Repeatedly pausing and unpausing until the framerate was acceptable was the only real workaround. Had to download the AMDVLK driver (proper version for my card) and force the game to use that via launch options. Also had to stack in a bunch of other launch options to then fix the shader stutter that was causing hideous lag and freezes.
Dogfight works perfectly.
Joystick does not prevent sleep and the mouse must be wiggled occasionally to keep the screen from locking
Severe drop in frame rate after returning to hangar in fleet battle.
Returning to the hangar in Fleet Battles drops the framerate to 2-3hz.

Severe FPS drops in fullscreen mode, solved by using Borderless instead
Screensaver would activate as joystick inputs did not prevent screensaver. Solved with "gamemoderun %command%" in launch parameters.
If using Fullscreen mode, returning to the hangar in Fleet Battles caused the game to drop to 3fps. Minimizing and reopening would fix. Solved the issue completely by using Borderless instead.
Use gamemode and Borderless window mode and that seems to solve all issues.
